Wow, haven't been here for awhile, thought I'd update you guys! My last addition for 2009 was rescued January 31. My mom texts me asking if I want an amel male, it's free. I've never been a huge fan of amels, nor do I need any more males, but I said yeah anyway. When I got home, I almost cried. He's in HORRIBLE shape. The previous owner said he was 5 feet long, eating and shedding great...

He doesn't look like he's been fed in months!

I'm about ready to hunt down this person and hit them. However, this guy's in good hands now. I offered him a mouse when I got home from work and he nom'd it with gusto (I know, I know, supposed to wait a week for 'em to settle in... But really...)

What would you guys recommend to get weight on this guy? Regular once a week feedings, or more frequent smaller meals?

Pictures are horrible, sorry guys-- taken in my bedroom at 3am with flash on most of 'em.

That poor snake!! He was near starved, I would feed every 7 days but feed him an appropriate sized mouse. You could also try feeding a few appropriate sized rats in between feeds as I understand they have more fat, but I also hear some snakes will sometime take a preference to them over the mice or vice versa. I really would not go to feeding him faster than that because you might put weight on him to fast and overweight is worse than under weight.

Oh and if you put cuts in the skin of the mice, several cuts just through the skin or one big cut from nose to tail. It aids in digestion and they get more out of it and grow faster.

I am partial to Amels and I think he is gorgeous, I would love to have him and nurse him back to health, of my 6 snakes, 2 are Amels.
 
That's one lucky snake to have found you. Keep us posted on health progression. We all love a happy story.
 
That poor snake! So thin! Since healthy adult males are supposed to eat every 10-14 days, I think Asbit's suggestion is excellent!
 
OMG! That poor snake. Its so thin even a newbie like me can tell he isn't healthy. I'll join the queue to beat that last owner. So glad you took him.
 
Thanks for the suggestions Asbit! I didn't even think of cutting slits in his mouse last night, I just wanted to get SOMETHING into him. He's a very paranoid boy, always on the alert, but refuses to hide. I've covered his tank so he'll stop being so on edge.

Of my 19 corns, the last two I picked up were amels (this guy, and an amel motley/cube hatchie) I'm growing to like them, I've just always liked the greys and classics better :p He's gorgeous though. I'm lovin the little heart on his head.
 
Wow he is really thin! :( poor boy..it's great that you rescued him now he'll have a good life :) Congrats on the beautiful new addition :)
 
I think I might be a little cautious with meal size to begin with. I might do nice fat hoppers or smaller weanlings or even rat fuzzies for the first few meals. I'd slit, too. It sure wouldn't hurt to use Nutribac on his mice for a few months, either, just to make sure his digestive system has all the help it can get! I'd go with a seven day schedule.
 
That is the worst condition I have ever seen in a snake still alive. He is so lucky you found him. If you can, I would take him to your exotics vet to check for any parasites.
And make sure he is double time quarentened. I would also feed rat fuzzies or rat pups as they do have more fat and he needs it. Once a week is good. He is a cutie. I hope he makes it.

I'm glad to see he ate for you. That also tells me that he probably is thin from neglect and not sickness. Doesn't make the previous owner look good, but at least maybe the snake is OK.
 
I'm horrified someone would let him get like that and then say he is healthy. I'm glad you took him in and I hope he gets better.

I agree with what Nanci said, I would give him smaller meals till he gets more weight on and the Nuribac would be a good idea too.
 
I hope he has a speedy recovery under your care. It's sweet you took him in..

Now find that bastard so I can beat the crud out of him.
 
Oh my God! I've never seen a skinny snake before... wow. The poor thing was dying! Starving to death. How could someone do that? Give him a good punch for me, will you?

Man, I can't get over that. Poor baby. I'm SO glad he's with you now. D:
 
omg so bizarre! I rescued a Amel male as well in january, and he looks accectly like yours! Same skinny body, same colour. Pour guys :( Mine got to me as a "non-feeder" but his first mouse whas gone in 5 seconds :S
 
Poor thing... he's so thin! :( But I'm sure with your care he'll turn into a looker!
 
I gotta get me some rat pups, or fuzzies. They're considerably more expensive than mice around here, but his health is worth it!!
Unfortunately, the previous owner has other snakes as well. No more corns, but he has ball pythons, and is 'very into them' hopefully that means they're being cared for...

Estel is doing good, keeping his meal down like a pro. Hasn't passed it out the other end yet, but I'm not too worried about that. I'm gonna talk to mom about ordering nutribac tomorrow :)
