Hello,

I was wondering if you guys could help me for a second, by trying to determine the sex of this snake..?

Boy. But remember, that is a guess, and I am basing it mostly on the second picture, and imagining that I can see through your thumb! None of the pictures show the whole tail, and corns aren't the best species to sex by looking at their tail anyway. And I hope I never call myself an expert!

If you really want to know, the Arizona Reptile Center in Mesa will probe him/her for you for $5.

It isn't my snake. Its a yearling someone is selling, and I only want a female, but they dont know the sex. LOL

I'm guessing female. But I would NEVER buy a snake, if you want a specific sex, based on a visual guess.

There was just a thread yesterday or the day before that had PERFECT tail photos. Something about guess the morph of the babies? And then the dad wasn't the real dad??

ahahaha, Chip! ^^^

I love your quick wittedness..
It looks female to me but I only have one boy to go off of, but his tail looks much longer than the one photographed. but I also second what Nanci said about not buying a snake that you don't FORSURE know the sex of, more over so when your looking for a specific sex. :)

Here it is.

See how the male tail is fat and tapers smoothly and slowly, whereas the female tail is puffy right before the vent, with a sharp drop in the width of the tail almost immediately, and the tail itself is generally thinner?

I've had clutches I guessed almost 100% before popping, but it's kinda like hitting a bunch of basketball shots in a row, you're going to miss soon! I popped a snake female twice this year, and rechecked "her" for Christen, when it popped male easily.

I'm no expert but I have to say I agree with Nanci. Generaly it can be somewhat judged from the lenght of the tail but in my opinion this sometimes varies from snake to snake and isn't very good. I think the main thing is to just focus on the two inches after the cloaca. Like Nanci said. If the tail after the cloaca stays generaly the same thickness for those 2 inches it should be a male and if it tapers a female. Again like others said it can't be 100% realiable but I have had good success doing this with snakes 2 or older. It is a tough call with your snake.

It's tough with babies! My best Guess the Sex ever was when a person posted a photo of her snakes mating, and said the fire (or whatever) was the female, and the butter (or whatever) was the male. I replied, are you sure, because from their positions, mating, it would appear that the fire is actually the male! Oh no, she was sure, proven sexes, etc.. I replied, well, just in case, I'd watch the "male" closely in about two months! Sure enough- he laid eggs! So funny.
