extra small pinkie mice

Jadie.Glitch

:) colubridstudios.com :)
My local petstores (including the "chain" ones) all charge approx. $1.50 EACH for their extra-small pinkie mice. Is this outrageous sounding to anyone but me!?? (the adults are $1.99, what makes them think they can charge so much for babies?)

I went online to see if I can order some cheaper but the shipping there is outrageous as well (like $80!!). They are still going to be cheaper going this way but the fact that the shipping is so steap just makes me want to say "no".

Where is the best website to get frozen extra-small pinkie mice from? (right now I am looking at bigappleherp.com), or does anyone know a breeder in the Northeastern Oregon or Southeastern Washington area that can give me a good deal on frozen or live??

I SUPER appreciate any help or advice that I can get!!

I use the mouse factory and I really liked the service and the product and I've heard others on this site recommend them too.

That's amazing! I sell pinkies for 50 cents (I have a retail pet shop). Even adult mice are a buck. See if there's a local herp society around, if nothing else you can meet some folks to go in on a frozen order with you. I've used all the big rodent places, none have let me down. I usually go with Cajun.

Heh I charge 25 cents for them. Some of the local shops here get $1.30 for the same thing. I overhead is a real crapper...

What if you buy normal pinks and cut them in half or thirds before thawing? Then you get two or three for the price of one!

And if the snake can get it's mouth around the chunk! It's fine breaking or cutting a frozen pink, but the insides are pretty liquid when you warm them up. Pinkies are cheap, I can imagine cutting them to cut costs.

If you're only feeding half, you can cut it while frozen. If you're feeding both halves, you can cut it after thawing. I think it's messier to thaw them when cut, but oh well.

Jadie,

Where exactly are you in OR? You might check House of Reptiles in Tigard if you're in the Portland area. I think they're about 1.29 for pinks, still really expensive, but better then $2.

If you are in the area, we should get together with Cassie and split an order.

when i got my mice they charged me 1.99 they were still babies, it seems a little ridiculous. thats why i breed my own its so much cheaper and its not that much work, very easy to take care of and then after your mum has her babies you can just freeze them yourself.

I'm sorry Widget! I never saw this response! Anyways, that sounds like an okay idea. If we could get a quote on an order split three ways that would be great and if it ends up saving us all money then I don't see why we can't do that. Oh, and I live in Eastern Oregon (about a 3-hour drive from House of Reptiles) but I am making a trip by there next weekend (Nov 17th).

Yes, I REALLY want to start my own colony (I already do gerbils and feed the adolescent gerbils to my adult corns) but mice are SOOO stinky! I just can't stand it... does anyone have any good solutions on keeping their smell down? The only thing that I've seen work is cleaning their tank EVERYDAY... I'm not lazy (well not... TOO lazy, lol) but scrubbing a dirty mouse tank everyday just doesn't sound like fun to me...

Here is the answer to your problem. Get some African soft furred rats. If housed properly so that they can not chew out, you will have animals that don't stink and the pinks are about the same size as mice. Just have to use them fast cause they do grow a bit faster then mice. I'm feeding all of my corns the ASF weaners now.

Really??? Why do they not stink as much? I know that gerbils don't stink as much because their urine is in their stool so it comes out in one clump that dries quickly and doesn't saturate their bedding. Is this the same with the ASF rats?

They lack the scent glands that regular rats have. You can also raise them in colonies with other males with no problems. I'll see if I can snap a pic of some with babies to show size.
