Feeding cats frozen mice

I was just googling something about frozen mice, and came across some cat forum where these women were talking about feeding their cats frozen mice- the same ones we would feed our snakes! My first though was naturally, wtf? But then I started looking into it and I guess it's not so weird.

Apparently some cat owners have just taken the entire "raw" diet a little further. I've heard about feeding dogs raw, boneless chicken with the same mindset. I'm actually kind of considering throwing my cat a fuzzie next time I feed and seeing if she takes it. Maybe it will even reduce the number of poor little birds she heartlessly tortures. (doubt it!)

Does anyone do this, though? Or would you be willing to try it? Am I going to be the only weirdo slipping my cat a fuzzie next week?

I feed my cats the pinky/fuzzies mice that snakes refuse. I feel it's better than just throwing them away. It's not often at all, but oh the feline chorus when I start thawing out dinner for the worms!

Haha, no kidding? It really is a good idea. I had to throw out an entire box of fuzzies recently after leaving them out all night. Not that I could feed those to my cat, but i felt guilty waisting them. So how handy that you have another option.

It wouldn't have ever occured to me had I not read that. Do they eat them whole? Does it take them a while to eat it? Is it messy? Kind of morbid questions but I'm having a hard time envisioning this lol.

The image of a bunch of kitties begging for frozen mice makes me laugh.

Definitely! I fed whole prey to my fur kids before I got snakes.
I started when I got mu ferrets. They are all private bred & are raised to recognize raw & whole prey as food.
I already had mice on hand for my ferrets, when I got my snakes. :)
If I had the money & resources, all of my critters would be strictly whole prey.

I never thought of doing this...although my cat does show immense interest in the mice when I'm thawing them. Next time I have a refusal, I may have to give it to her and see what she does.

My cats steal thawing mice whenever they get the chance! They were from a litter by one of the stable cats, so they had their diet supplemented by stuff their mum caught right from the start. They get whole fish chopped up, thawed day-old chicks and chicken pieces, (uncooked, with the bones in) as well as their tinned food. They only reason they don't have a totally raw diet like my dog does is because they tend to try to hide food rather than eat it straight away.

Any kind of raw diet for cats and dogs is better than commercials. It's just that the number of pinkies and fuzzies needed for a cat would break the bank! Throwing one here and there definitely won't harm your cat though. The only reason I don't do it is because one of mine is already way too interested in the snakes already, without getting a taste of rodent and smelling it on them.

Our siamese tries to steal mice when I'm feeding. She gets extra pinks from time to time. She loves to drink the water I used to thaw the mice. I call it mouse soup. lol

haha, EW! That mice water is probably the grossest part of frozen mice to me for some reason. But you know what, my cat refuses to drink water out of any traditional water bowl no matter how fresh or clean the water is(she will drink out of my personal cups and the toilet, oddly enough) I wonder if she'll take mouse soup? :roflmao:

I think it's hysterical that cats will steal thawing mice. I shared that with my boyfriend and he loved it.

Lisa, I think I'm with you. I'm moving up to hoppers next feeding and have a left over fuzzie. I think I might give it to her outside though.
