Female bred but never laid eggs.....

I was just wondering if anyone else has ever had this happen. This female was bred by a proven male, shed about a month later and never laid any eggs. I provided a nest box and she got in it for a few days then she was acting normal again. I offered her food and she ate. She went into what should have been her post lay shed and proceded to shed normally. I have palpated her and I don't feel any eggs in her. I've been breeding for over 10 years and have produced thousands of corns and I've never had this happen before. Any input is appreciated.

Humans don't conceive every time they copulate.

Did you ever think you felt eggs, or she looked like she was heavy with eggs? It would be pretty obvious.

I had a female do this last year. I seen her breed with the male, but never laid any egg's. I looked her over to make sure she was not egg bound. She look and ate fine. This year she would not breed to any of the males. I think it might be her age. She is 11 this year. I'm no longer going to try to breed her any more.

She could still lay eggs if that was this year. You could try to reintroduce the male, but even if they don't hook up again the females can retain sperm for later when they are not ovulating.
I have one that's got me guessing too. Shed, doesn't want to be in the laybox, and is eating. I had a few hookups lately where the female went blue a day or so after the hookup. I'm pretty sure that's too soon for a prelay shed.

She was a virgin so this is her first year breeding.

She did obviously gain weight like she was gravid but the swelling just went away.

I've tried breeding her to a different male, he is interested but she isn't.

I guess not every corn has read the books and doesn't play by the rules...lol.

I have a female who ovulates like crazy every year. I've tried her with three different males over the years (two proven) since she was three. The matings have always been witnessed but she's never laid eggs - either fertile or infertile.

I've given up bothering her with the process now. Sometimes you just get unlucky.

Never had it happen, before, but I have three females who have done this (pre-lay shed but no eggs) this year. However, one has had her second shed (after pre-lay shed), and I can, now, feel eggs in her. I haven't checked the other two, yet, but will once they have their second shed.
I do know that some other people have experienced this though ... where the female breeds, has pre-lay shed, and do not lay eggs BUT then they go on to have another shed and lay eggs at that time.
Not to say that this is what is happening, in your case, since it could be due to something else (such as re-absorbing eggs, etc.) ... but it is a possibility and shows that there can still be hope.:)

I have one female that is the only one I saw evidence of activity (no witnessed hookups), & I know she was ovulating when the male was in with her. She shed, refused food, but no eggs. Maybe it's just waiting for the water to boil, or maybe she just isn't going to lay eggs.
