Nonnative Wildlife Invasion Prevention Act (HR 669)

PetSmart, our friends in the pet specialty industry and pet parents are watching closely a proposed new regulation beginning to inch its way through Congress. The Nonnative Wildlife Invasion Prevention Act (HR 669) proposes an unreasonably complicated and ineffective process to determine which non-native species can be in the country and which ones can't, including species (many enjoyed as pets) that already are well established in the U.S.

The bill creates severe restrictions that could adversely impact the importation, breeding, sale, or interstate transport of common household pets such as gerbils, hamsters, guinea pigs, fish, and various birds, reptiles and amphibians in the U.S. A coalition of animal rights groups that includes the Humane Society of the U.S. is pushing for the bill's passage without amendments.

While PetSmart agrees with and supports the underlying premise of the proposed regulation - to keep harmful non-native species out of the country - we oppose the proposed legislation on several grounds. More specifically:

* We support a process that more fully takes into account the risks associated with various species based on sound scientific data.
* We believe the current drafting of the bill does not take into account existing protective measures, the impact to pet parents and the economic impact on the pet specialty industry. It also requires funds and staffing not currently available to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, which would be tasked with administrating and enforcing the regulation. Moreover, it could lead to the mass release and/or euthanasia of pets.
* We believe a more practical and meaningful regulatory process could be developed and implemented in a timely manner. Along with our industry partners we've offered our expertise to help craft legislation that is more reasonable and still achieves the desired intent.
* We believe the small pets, reptiles, fish, birds and amphibians we sell currently meet the intent of the bill and do not create any of the risks outlined in the proposed legislation, yet virtually all of them would be in jeopardy under the bill as currently drafted.

A hearing on the bill is scheduled April 23 in the House Subcommittee on Insular Affairs, Oceans & Wildlife. PetSmart will be represented at the hearing by the Pet Industry Joint Advisory Committee, a pet industry trade organization of which we are a member.

We will continue to advocate for a more effective approach to regulating harmful non-native species.

I think something else we should consider...

as proactive approach to our survival, is to gather together all of the names of all organizations which support this, and any other unreasonable prohibitions against our hobby. We should each make every effort to always educate any friends, relatives, or anyone else who will listen, about their short sighted agenda against our survival. If each of us can convince somebody else to avoid sending donations, and maybe even to begin a chain of pet owners who will continue to persuade others to boycott these organizations, maybe we can make a small difference in their financial ability to continue to harass us in the future.

There are A LOT of exotic pet owners and lovers around the country who donate to these organizations, with either their time or money. If they knew their funds were partially going to stop their hobby / passion / business, maybe they will find better uses for their hard earned dollars.

We may all be just a drop in the bucket to them, but why help fill up their buckets, even a little bit?

Ok folks, this is what the opposition is trying do by putting the fear of god into the normal non pet keeper.

take a look at this PDF and let me know what you think.

Here is the their website http://www.necis.net/

Again these are the people that want our Hobby DEAD.

Read that PDF that Jim has worked so hard to show us! See the partial snake picture on the right? I am sure WE all know what he really is but this is what it says about that pictured snake:

A Burmese python
purchased at a
manageable size
from a pet store can
be a brawny 8-footer
within a year. Unable
to handle such a big
snake or find a new
home for it, an owner
will too often resort
to illegally releasing
it in the wild. In the
right environment,
such as the swamps
of southern Florida,
it can soon enough
become a 200-pound,
20-foot, top-of-thefood-
chain carnivore.

See how misinformed persons are causing more of an issue on HR669???

Kathy said straight out...TELL EVERYONE, EVERY PET STORE, SCREAM IT OUT FROM YOUR ROOF TOP!

Thank you Jay for posting this thread! Thank you Jim for keeping us posted like you have been! Jay, Ashley, Ryan, and myself have already printed off and signed 21 letters each and sent them off! You all can do the same!

This is a list of organizations that support HR669...

that I took from a post on KS. I didn't see the list on US ARK - maybe I missed it? I do not know if this list is complete or accurate. If anyone knows of any additions, or mistakes in this list, please correct it. I don't see PETA or HSUS on the list, but I am quite sure I have seen them mentioned elsewhere.

Please do whatever you can to "help" them as much as they have "helped" us!
