So I have had my mice for about 3 months, and I began typing out a message about how frustrated I was that I seem to have the only group of mice in the world that dont want to breed. And while typing up the message I decided stop and take pictures of my 4 mice, 1 male and 3 females. I went on to explain that I had 2 fat females, but they've always been that way so that they were not pregnant, and a skinny black one and a male mouse that loves to groom them all :rolleyes: , my mouse seemingly not breeding and is a hairdresser :eek1:

But as I took them out I was shocked to see this female looking HUGE and lumpyish? :shrugs: She seems pregnant to me... she didnt look this way a little under a week ago when I changed out the bedding...

Those mouse breeding veterans out there... looking at her can you tell about how long I have till she drops those babies? Being the first babies in the colony, I want to be sure to be around close to after she has them so I can monitor wether she tends to them in a motherly manner as I plan to cull them when they are fuzzies, or if she has eaten some I'll just take em out and freeze the pinks.

Anyway... here are the photo's I took of her just a few minutes ago.

OH... also I wanted to ask, since I've never had a mouse that had babies before... should I take her out and put her in her own tank away from the colony? Or is she fine in there with the rest?

Wow, congrats on the preggo mouse! She looks like she's got a week to go. Right before the birth they look so HUGE. Like they are all belly. Don't take her out. That would not be good. Her sisters will help, and if you take her out before the birth, then the male won't be able to get her pregnant again till her next heat. Beleive it or not, he will mate with her within hours of giving birth. Poor thing! :grin01:
 
Yup, I am not really experience in breeding mice but it seemed like a week to me too, even before I read BM's reply!
 
Hmm I'm gonna guess around 5 days :grin01: but congrats!!!

You don't have to take her out, but she will probably become pregnant again right after giving birth.

And if the cage is large enough and u have food in the cage, she shouldn't have a problem with eating her babies or others eating them.

But then again she's a first time mom, so who knows...
 
I agree, I'd say a week or less. and leave her in the colony. It's best not to disrupt an established colony..
 
I'll also vote for about 5 days :) she is a very pretty color. Nice sleek healthy looking coat.

Is she considered a yellow mouse? I've heard yellow is homozygous dominant lethal in mice. Someone more knowledgeable should explain it in more detail... I've just heard if you cross 2 mice carrying this dominant trait, you should expect smaller than normal litters since some offspring do not survive to be born.

Interesting... I have no idea :shrugs: I just picked out some females and a male from PetCo months ago... and picked out the prettiest ones :grin01: That's about all my knowledge on Mouse Traits... "that one looks pretty" "that one looks pretty" "awwwe that one is cute" :cheers:
 
Is the male a fawn/red colored one like the female pictures? if so, you will have a smaller litter most likely. I always make sure not to cross 2 yellow/red colored ones like the one pictured.

The male is fawn/white "marbled"

My other female is Grey with red eyes, and I have a Black female as well. I have suspision that the Grey one is pregnant, the Black one is still thin.
 
I think you should save all the babies and have lots of pretty mice. =-)
Seeing the pinkies alive I wouldn't be able to freeze them. =-(

What would be the point of getting the mice if I were to keep all of the stinky mice? I got them to feed my snakes, I've culled a few adult mice that did not do well within in the colony... to me, its really no big deal. :shrugs: It's food for my snakes... Meat. :cheers:
 
What a gorgeous wee moosey butt!!! LOL

It took me a mere few months to have 7 breeding colonies of mice from just one pet shop bought pair. Mice breeding is soooo frustrating at times... new mumies eating babies, daddies not leaving mummies alone and getting the crap bit out them LOL

I love mooses though, please keep us updated :)

How gorgeous :) I used to have mummas get sooo big (20+ litters) that they waddled about everywhere... It was hilarious... she would waddle - stop - sleep - waddle - eat - sleep - stop - waddle - attempt to run on the wheel - sleep - waddle off... yup that was her day LOL

Really? WOW! I've never seen a pregnant mouse, so I had no idea! She's got abit to go... poor girl... and I thought *I* was big when I carried 4 babies in MY tummy :rolleyes: :grin01:
 
Aahh that's crazy looking O.O

I had a female mouse when I was younger, caged with my brother's mouse, which I thought was also a female.

Well, shortly after, we had a litter. I had no idea she was pregnant o_O

I was devastated when my mom sold them as snake food. We kept one, which we thought was a female, caged with it's momma, lather rinse repeat..

I check on her last night, and she was dead. when I picked her up her belly was wet looking, she was a little open on her bottom and there was some "green" on her belly? :shrugs:

UGH... how frustrating... I'm about to just cull em' all, only thing saving them is that I just bought more mouse food :rolleyes:

They have until that is gone to produce me some babies darn it! :twoguns:

Those with experience... ELLE! What happened?!?!?
 
That sucks Lore... I'm sorry. I hope the others produce for you. If not, I'm sure your snakes will find a use for them.
 
In that last pic, she looks deflated on one side. I wonder if she had a cyst or infection. I'm sorry to hear about your loss and your troubles with breeding.
