First Feeding........ Success! (new viv pics)

So I am in no way rich considering I am 17 years old. However, changing it once every 2-3 weeks sounds reasonable.

So if poo is brown and obviously disgusting, what was the orange crusty stuff I found?

I like the way your tank is coming along! It's really looking good..I recently bought some plants and a log for Sythe's small 10 gallon..I think I went a bit overboard..I'll get pics of his enclosure soon..My friend thinks I turned the tank in a tropical jungle..lol..but honestly it came out really good..I like the rubbing stone idea as well..and as for the lamp..even though I'm not a supporter of it..If your room really gets that cold that right now the cool side is in the 60's then maybe a low wattage heat emitter or red light would help..snakes won't see the red light so it won't mess up their day patterns..As for cleaning out the tank..I actually clean mine out once a month..but that's just me..I might actually start using the wipe out 2 for the reptile furniture instead of soaking them in the bath tub for like a half hour in hot water...as for what the poop looks like..like others have said..you'll know it when you see it..it's kind of dark colored and will usually be very moist when fresh but will dry up into a solid when left for a while..

I'm glad your snake is doing so well for you! :0) I recently fed Sythe his first meal 2 days ago..It took him a bit but he eventually struck at it..only thing that worries me a bit is that after he finished the pinkie anytime someone walked by him he was striking at the glass very hard and rattling his tail..He might turn out to be a biter and that's gonna be difficult for me to overcome..but I do want him to be docile and I know it's gonna take work from both of us..but yes...congrats on all the improvements! :0)

About the heat gun... I dont trust those things... I just believe that they are amazing for smooth surfaces, but for rough substrate i wouldnt go with it. Just get a thermometer.

Well, good luck.
What are you talking about, these are the most accurate things on the market. IF you have one keep using it.

BTW, W.O. 1&2 can be found online or in a local pet store.

Water and bleach solution works the same than buying expensive cleaners.
1-2 caps of bleach to 1 gallon water works typically for most people. This is enough to kill any bacteria.

I'm a little bit of a sucker for advertising. I just can't think of myself using anything aside from what's commercialy ment for it. Also, bleach makes me puke. No joke. If you was a table with bleach, let it dry overnight, and I come in and stand next to the table, I puke. It happend in 3rd grade...:uhoh:

And, that's just what I use, not what the OP should use, though I still like the stuff.

Orange crusty stuff... are you sure it was orange? In my experience I have never seen orange poo. Was it like the fruit orange color?

Now I'm going to say something that Mr. Munson will hate :smash:: If it looks that abnormal, you may want to take a sample of it to the vet.

I'm sorry but BLEACH? I know a lot of people say to use bleach, but I mean come on! What happens to people if they drink bleach? They die, or get really sick. So you are washing a reptile's things, who weighs less than 20 grams, in a bleach solution. How does that make sense? We get really sick and sometimes even die depending on how much we drink of it, and you put it in with your tiny reptile? One lick of it and it'll be dead! And I know, I know, you rinse it off afterward, but, (if you haven't noticed) bleach is a very strong substance, and the fumes from it are enough to make a person pass out. Pretty much, if it can harm a full grown person, it will harm things smaller than a full grown person, proportionally. This means that if your snake is 35x smaller than you, then it will harm the snake 35x more. They make commercially available cleaners for reptiles, because they are safe. A reptile can be around that stuff and not freak out. That is also why they are so expensive, they are hard to make, and zoo-med pretty much cornered the market, considering they are the only manufacturer I have seen.

ANYWAYS! I can't find any orange crusty stuff any more considering he is in aspen now. However, I did find some poop! There was poop on his vines when I woke up yesterday morning. I cleaned it off. FOR ALL OF YOU WHO DON'T KNOW WHAT SNAKE POOP LOOKS LIKE-- IT LOOKS LIKE BIRD POOP!

Why was that so hard to say? lol

People DILUTE the bleach before using it. I think most people use a 1/10 solution.

They probably didn't mention that because that would be OBVIOUS to most people; because of the reasons you stated.

No I understand that, I know how people do it, but would you drink bleach? Even if it was diluted? Would you wash your plates and silverwear in bleach? I mean if it has the same disenfecting power then why not, right?

Bleach evaporates at 69-71 degrees F.

And a Bleach solution is far less concentrated than 100% Chlorine Bleach. Also, check with your local water sanitation center, they use cholinated bleach to kill the bacteria in drinking water. Another question, how many keepers use bottled water for their snakes? I go through about a gallon a week for just my 3 animals.

Congrats on the new Corn, and aside from possibly needing a hide or two I like your setup!

Oh, I have added more hides now. I figured he might want to be on the surface of the aspen for a while so I put some toilet paper rolls in. However, he mostly tucks his body away under the aspen and lays his head on top... its really cute!

Oh, and I use bottled water for my snake... I thought you were supposed to?

I clean with a mild bleach solution, no problems. The crusty stuff is probably dried urates, which is normal. When you clean the viv you may see a yellow powdery substance on the bottom that is also urates. Snakes poo anywhere they want I have a couple who poo on the fake plants. It is very hard to find with little guys, but as the snake grows so does the poo. I don't know about anyone else but on cleaning day I also give my snake a wipe down with a damp cloth (no bleach).

Hmm, well my snake swims. I don't know if that is normal, but I mean I am not forcing him to swim, he just does it by himself. It's pretty funny acctually.

I think when snakes first get a big water bowl, they like to swim. After a while the novelty wears off.

I have well water, but I think chlorinated water smells disgusting. Lots of people use bottled water.

Bleach does not harm your animals in diluted solution. But if you are afraid of Bleach you can use Oxyclean as well.
Many people in the tropical fish world will use it for cleaning their tanks if they are afraid of using bleach. But again, I have been using a bleach solution before you were born and never had problems with fish or snakes. Heck we used it in the science labs as well to clean out tanks and cages to sterilize.

And by the way, many restaurants use bleach in their Rinse water as required by law in many states.

As for bottled water, I do not even waste my money on that, typically its TAP water in those bottles and no better than your home water. I will place my water in a bottle over night and this will allow the chlorine to evaporate, chlorine has a short shelf life or use tropical fish de chlorinator. But seriously, if you are afraid to give your animals the same water you drink well, why drink that water as well?
