First shed!!

A couple days ago I noticed that my Okeetee had gone blue. So I've been waiting for him to shed. This morning after I had gotten ready for work I went out to check on the snakes like I do every morning. I found a snake shed!! The really funny thing about it is that it's not from the snake that I thought it was gonna be from. Aparently I never saw when Nibbles (a normal colored Motley) went blue. I didn't really get a chance to check the skin out because I was already late heading out the door, but from the quick glance that I gave it it looks like both eye caps and the tail tip were shed like they were supposed to!! So I am gonna take it as a sign that I am atleast doing something right with these two(they are the first two snakes of any kind that I have ever owned).

Now for a question. What would be the best way to save the skin? I would like to keep the skins that they shed so that I can keep a 'record' of their growth(I know that you can't really get an accurate measurement from a shed skin).

yeah but think about the hundred of times they will shed, is it really worth it?
i gave it a breif thought when i got monty but the thought of trying to store all that lot put me off

plus if you've got pictures it doesn't seem worth it
 
I still get excited and keep sheds, my oldest ones are a year old and show no signs of deterioration. I keep them in plastic envelopes that are for cds
 
They're so hard to throw away, though! I have at least one from everyone. Sometimes I give them to kids that come over. They love them! And I recently learned that you can use a shed to scent a mouse to get some kinds of snakes to eat. (Or, I guess you could just use the actual other snake...)

When I got Inez, there was a fresh shed in her deli cup with her!

Yeah but it's neater to beable to lay the sheds out next to each other and see the progression of size. Also my thought is that a wafer thin piece of skin is not going to take up that much room, even after a year or two of collecting them(it's not like I have a house full of snakes that I want to keep the skins from). I think what I'm gonna do is use one of those old tupperwear containers that are in the closet and just keep the skins in ziplock baggies labeled with date and which snake.

Besides which, I'm a self proclaimed pack rat. I keep almost everything for awhile atleast!!!LOL

I have some of Raydin's laying all over my dresser. It's so cool when they shed and their colors brighten, saddles become more defined. I find them hard to throw away as well. I compared my last two and noticed quite a bit of growth (I know they are not accurate measurements), but you can defiantely see growth. I need to find a more organized way of storing them though instead of laying them around for cats to claw and destroy lol. I dunno, it was cool at first but now since I've seen it shed three times it's like... eh... whatever. But it is definately cool when you see it.
 
By the time that I got home from work last night Gratch(Okeetee) had shed also. Both sheds were perfect (eye caps and tail tips were shed). I didn't realize that I would still be able to see their markings in the shed skin. I've found shed skins in the woods but never noticed that you could still see the snakes pattern. But then again the skins were outside so they were probably a bit sun bleached or something. For the next couple of monthes or so I'm gonna keep Nibbles and Gratch's sheds just to see the size progression. Right now I'm just keeping the skins in ziplock baggies with the snake's name, color and sex( or lack there of as I have no idea if Gratch is male or female).

Snakes are so cool!

You might want to press it in a book. My mother and I used to do this with flowers and the result was pretty pleasant. You could turn it into a scrap book, add some pictures of your snakes and write down information.

I used to save all my sheds in wherever they would fit.. I think it ended up being a plastic critter keeper. I had a decently growing collection until the intoduction of Oliver to my home. Apparently puppies find snake sheds irresistibly tasty.

PS: That's why I mentioned the book. If you want it to last keep it somewhere safe.

That a great idea! Mine just had her first shed, and I can't bear to toss it either, glad I'm not the only one! It's like the first haircut or the first tooth, I feel it should be commemorated. Though, granted when you end up with multiple corns, the novelty might wear off :)
 
what about thumb tacking it to the wall? that's what i just did with millicent's shed. i didn't know what else to do with it. i obviously don't think i'll keep it forever, but i would like to see how many sheds/how big the sheds get within the next few months.
