Florida. Garter Snake?

Nanci

A friend of mine sent me a pic of this snake. He thought it was a rattle snake. And this is an outdoorsy person- not a snake hater! I asked for a couple more pics, but I'm 99% sure I have ID'd it correctly as a T. sirtalis- I don't know if it's a subspecies or not.

Definitely not a rattle snake. I hope he didn't kill it, so many people mistake nonvenomous snakes for rattlers it is not funny. Unfortunately most of those poor snakes see a shovel.

it does look like an eastern garter but the stripe seems to be faded i caught one Saturday and boom musk! but he or she is pretty though

I'm glad this is a live shot! :) I am getting so sad about how many dead snakes I'm seeing on my FB wall already dead then asking what it is :( Then all of their friends telling them things like a Texas Brown is a Copperhead or a Broad Band water snake is a Copperhead-are you kidding me?? ARG! noone seems to want to believe they have killed a totally harmless snake--'cuz then they might look like an ass--"Look at this nonvenomous snake I killed!" Sorry--went off on a rant....lol yup, looks like an Eastern Garter..cute little face :)

There seem to be many variations of color in the Florida Garter Snakes. Florida has 400+ soil types, numerous varieties of habitats, microclimates, and other ecological niches to be had by Garters as well as other forms of flora & fauna. All of these variations of habitat result in differing looks of reptiles which fill these niches.

Totally a garter snake. I have a baby at the moment that I hope I can get eating. My boyfriend's brother tried to run over it with a lawn mower. Then when that didn't kill it he tried killing it with a rake. Then for some reason he put it in a soda bottle, called my boyfriend (I was with him) and asked him if he wanted to come get it. He said it was 30 inches. Got there and seen it's barely 12 inches. Just a tiny baby. But it had nearly it's whole tail chopped off and was all scraped up! The little guy is eating pinky heads soaked in tuna juice and earth worms. Hope he survives.

Anyway he also has a very faded stripe like the one in this picture but is a butterscotch color (may change as he gets older).

I don't plan on keeping this guy. Just waiting for him to heal up and maybe get a bit bigger before setting him loose next to my pond. Lots of tadpoles and such to eat in there!

Typo. "He's eating pinky heads soaked in tuna juice and earth worms." I didn't mean that to sound like he's eating well. He's only ate 1 pinky heads so far and some chopped up earth worm. But is stubbern! I hope to get him eating well. Realized that it sounded like he was eating good when I had said I hoped to get him eating. Blah.

Definitely a garter and she either just ate a huge meal or is gravid. If you post that over at Thamnophis.com they will be able to tell if it's an eastern or a Florida blue. They know by the number of scales and lateral stripes which it is.
