flourescent mice- soon to be BP?!

My mum told me that when she was a kid, they used to sell dyed peeps (baby chickens) during Easter...They wouldn't survive long because the dye they used wasn't safe, and because of the high mortality rate it became illegal. I imagine you could have called someone about the dyed mice and the vendor would have been in a good bit of trouble. I hope no one fed them to their snakes... :nope:

I'm looking at their website and I'm pretty skeptical about the whole thing. The website isn't the greatest and the example pictures are horrid. The domain was just purchased/created in September of 2008. Their also is not an LLC by the name of NeonPets or Neon Pets in California.

I may be wrong about this as it's been some years since the glofish hit the market... but I am pretty sure that they are genetically modified to be sterile. It's not a physical process.
 
Prices look to be around $40 for normal "Glo-mice" and $55 for hairless. It's amazing that they are taking the effort to neuter them and (presumably) destroy all the unneeded females.

Hyp, the Glo-Fish seem to breed true for at least one generation, I've had a few fry turn up in the sump. Must also be the case for the mice.

Their website says they surgically neuter them.

If your animal eats a GloMouse™ it will NOT glow, nor will it give your pet special powers. It will however waste a neutered, expensive, and beautiful mouse that would make a much nicer pet than food.

I've seen the dyed mice at shows, the dye used is manic panic and its supposed to be safe for animlas.
 
Not to bump the thread, but as of today, these are already showing up as a pre-order on one of my pet shop's available price lists! I personally think they are going to be a short-lived fad. But someone probably said that about Scientology and Elvis.
 
I havnt read all the replys to this, but I think it is wrong!!!
Animals, fish, everything are beautiful enough without doing this kind of thing.
Man will stop at nothing for his own gain. Its just another way of exploiting animals to make more money.
I hope people here agree, we here all love snakes for what they are, we dont need to do this. I know if glow-snakes ever come on the market, i will never buy one!
 
Is your corn or king in your sig a morph? Just curious where you'd draw the line.
 
I'm really surprised you're comparing a morph which popped up naturally to humans genetically engineering animals. I personally see a huge difference between the two.
 
There's a difference, no doubt. But the poster said "Man will stop at nothing for his own gain," and "Its just another way of exploiting animals to make more money," and that made me wonder where he/she would personally draw the line. I've stated in this thread that I have no problem with genetic alteration to fish and wouldn't carry the mice. Everyone has their own line. I was simply curious as to where CC's was, no attack or suggestion that their logic was flawed.
 
These mice were made for science. Since they already exist for science, and making more is just a matter of breeding the science mice together, why not allow the pet trade to have some fun with them?

There's a sequence that codes for this protein. Your entire genome is made up of these sequences that make different proteins that allow you to function. One was once made in a jellyfish that builds a protein that, when it folds, happens to glow. All they did is extract this one little sequence and put it into the appropriate part of the mouse genome when a fertilized mouse egg had only divided a few times. The rest is letting nature take its course and have the mice do what they do: make more mice. You succeed at it once, you benefit for the rest of eternity (or as long as mice still have a sex drive, whichever is longer).

Different strains exist with the GFP sequence inserted into different promoters making different parts glow: skeleton, blood, fat, you name it. (This is how science does the research, learns new things, makes new drugs, and builds the tools that keep your baby brother alive long enough for them to figure out what's wrong at the hospital - just something to think about.) The ones they're selling apparently have GFP sequence on a skin promoter... oh, and they don't "glow" really - they need a special light on them to excite the GFP and make it emit its own light, visible to your eye.
