Foster Corn Snake

My sister found this little guy out in the cold and brought him to me (I have BPs) to take care of him for a while. My nephew plans to adopt him when he gets the setup complete. I've had him a couple of weeks now and he has eaten F/T without any hesitation, been easy to handle, and has even shed once. We feel he is someone's escaped pet. I still have a couple of questions before sending him to his forever home.

First of all, can anyone here tell from the picture what "color" he is? From what I've read, I can't decide between albino/amelanistic or possibly creamsicle.

Secondly, what size prey is appropriate for him? He's approximately 2-1/2 feet long and weighs 163 grams. He swallowed pinkies like they were candy, so we bought hoppers next. He ate two of those in one sitting with no problem. Should we get him something a bit bigger?

Last, he shed without warning. Should I have seen the signs that one sees with BPs? I never noticed his eyes any color but orange. If I had known he was about to shed, I would have upped his humidity because he did have a little trouble with the task.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

BTW, he's in my old holding tank. I do not use stick-on thermometers...just never peeled them off the glass. He has two hides and one UTH, and he thermoregulates well.

I looks like an Amel. It is harder to tell when albinos are going to shed. As far as food he might be able to eat smaller mice, but I'm not sure, I would check the munson's plan. That will probably help you better than I can.

Goodluck with the new snake he is very lucky you found him, he would have never made it in the wild with those beautiful bright colors. :)

Hey nice find. I would have to say for prey that a small adult mouse would be appropriate as well for the shed sometimes my snakes well shed a week or so after hes gone thru blue. Hope this helps. Later

Looks like an Amel to me.

At 163 grams a weaned mouse that is 14-20 grams every 7 days should be good. Possibly even an adult between 20-30g. Rule of thumb that the prey be 1 to 1 1/2 times the thickest part of the snakes body is the best measure.

You probably just missed the blue stage clearing, amels go an odd dusty pink. What a beauty, and a lucky find for him and you!

What a beauty!! Did you check the lost and found and Craigs List to see if anyone is missing him??

Thanks for all your replies! He is indeed a lovely snake and very sweet. I think he will make a great pet for my nephew. Of course, I'm prepared to take over should the need arise.

Nanci, I did check Craigslist and no snakes are reported missing in DFW. Lots for sale though...I have to be careful looking on Craigslist or I will be driving all over town "rescuing" them all! Actually, I did tell my little nephew to be on the listen in case any of his friends mentions someone they know with a snake that got out after they see his...you never know.

Thanks!

Robbin
