Geckos!

Peeple of zee wurl, relax
I have been bitten by the Gecko bug! :sidestep:

I know some of you here keep Cresties and Leos and honestly I can't decide which way to go. I love the look and all the morphs in both but the Leos really caught my eye. Then again, the Cresties are totally cool looking and actually seem to be less maintance.

So if you could recommend one over the other which would it be and why?

Having never owned a Leopard Gecko I can't say how their maintenance is. The reason I opted for a Crested Gecko was all the color variations available. Plus they just seemed more "unique" to me (although it seems they are quite the rage right now!) I had also looked into Gargoyle Geckos but they seem much more expensive and harder to come by, although about the same level of maintenance. I love my little crestie...he is the coolest little dude.

I used to keep both and breed cresteds. but IMO Leos are easier to maintain. cresteds need humidity. so depending on your area , you might need to spray their cages down once or twice a day to keep 50 - 70 % humidity. Leos will use a certain area of their cage for bathroom, Crested will basically poop every and anywhere. as for interacting with them, Crested will watch you from their cage but will care less, Leos on the other hand, will come out at night and will be watching you, almost as if to say "hey buddy over here" . observing them eat in something neat too, crested will dive for their crickets. you will hear them banging into the glass of the tank. almost makes ya wonder how they don't get hurt. Leos will chase crickets around since they are not arboreal. If you get a crested make sure your lid is on tight. I used to use the critter cages. with the sliding screen top. make sure it closed up tight. since cresteds are arboreal they have no problem walking out if the cage isn't shut tight. i hope this helped. If you have other questions. just ask

oh yeah temps wise crested start getting stressed out from 85 degrees on up. they like room temps. during the summer no heat will be needed. i think that is about it.

I personally like the Crested Geckos. I have not had the opportunity to have the Leopard Geckos as part of my collection, so my feedback will be biased. At one point, I was looking at the Leopard geckos, but I find the Cresteds a lot more attractive. I love the different morphs and the possibilities are endless. I plan on breeding the ones I have next year. As far as maintenance, there is not a problem with maintaining them - then again, I live in Southern California where the temperature and the humidity is perfect for the ones I have. I don't use any heating accessories and leave them in room temperature, which is 70 to 72 degrees. The humidity level is between 70 to 82. On a sunny day such as today, I take them outside in an all screen cage/tank for an hour or two.
