Golddust vs Ultra Caramel - Visual difference?

bitsy

Owned by Corns since 1991
I have a pair of Rich Z's Golddusts het Motley that I plan to breed next year. Been trying to figure out whether to put them together or put each with a Butter Mot.

I know that putting them together will give me (ignoring the het Mot for clarity) Golddusts, Butters and Ultra Caramels in varying proportions.

So my question... Is there any visual difference between Golddusts and Ultra Caramels as hatchlings?

Search has thrown me some pics of Dean's Ultra Caramel (Ursula), but to my watery and untutored eye, she looks the same as a Golddust. I know I could be way off with that and I'd be happy if someone could point me in the direction of a distinguishing feature.

Thanks.

As I understand it, that is one of the great unsolved questions in the corn world...trying to tell the difference, phenotypically, between anything homozygous ultra and ultramel. I'm sure that there may be some hatchlings that you could possibly identify with maybe a 90% accuracy in a mixed clutch, but you will have those that only breeding trails could 100% identify.

With them being het motley and adding to your mix the "hypo-ish" effect motley seems to have you are going to have a fun time come hatching with them lol...From the pics over the last few years, if they "lean" towards a more amel look, they are ultramels; more towards a "hypo-ish" look, ultra's...and that's just me, you'll get more definitive answers from folks working with them...

Prepare for a lot of holdbacks, that's your best bet...It would be cool to see the clutch grow, and how they differentiate in looks as time goes on :*)

Hmm - Golddust het Mot x Golddust het Mot sounds like the path to madness!

Guess I'll be making two Golddust het Mot x Butter Mot pairs instead.

Thanks for the info, very useful.

I tend to breed GoldDust het Motley to only Butter Motley. Saves brain strain trying to figure out what the offspring are when they hatch..... :)

I've got various combos of Ultra and other "hypo-like" cultivars such that hatching season gives me enough head scratching as it is.

Rich, if it's a problem for you, then I don't stand a chance! That seals the deal - Butter x Golddust it is.

You would be surprised at how many things hatch out here that leave me puzzled as to what the heck they are........... :crazy02:
