good second snake ?

and im not still not completely sure i'l get a BP but atm there looking like the snake i want....

Then get a BP... If all the talk here about ball python down sides still hasn't driven you away, it sounds like you'll be a great, devoted BP owner... Which is absolutely wonderful, because a devoted owner is exactly what a lot of BPs need. =)

No you are wrong.
The set up for an adult is a 4x2x2 with a perch for them to sit on, simple. They do not require specific humidity, they are quite content at normal room humidity (unlike a Bp)
Yes, some have attitude as youngsters, but so do some corns, Kings, Bp etc. so nothing new there.
And they are more simple to keep than Bp.
As for hunger strikes in Bp. They DO go off food for long periods, no harm to the snake, but it does stress owners when it happens. And new owners even more. I know I have them.
My personal recommendation to everyone who needs to ask the question, which one? Get the Carpet, they really are bullet proof.
They come with no baggage, and are as easy as corns to keep health and thriving.

I guess that the weather effects the difficulty of keeping them then... cause over here, BP's require no extra attention while Carpets do :)

Lady's and Gentlemen lol i have decided i shall get a BP :)

i was also told that if i buy a 40 gallon tank it will last the whole BP's life and as long as a put loads of shrubs and hides and stuff in it it wont get freaked out ? is that right ?

I have 4 BP's, and I can honestly say that I will never buy another one EVER again, unless it's one of my dream morphs for an insane price. 3 of mine have caused me more headaches than any snake has a right to. Yeah, they're calm, shy, and like to hide. But they are also very easily stressed out. And whey they're stressed out, they don't eat. If your temps are too far off, they don't eat. If the humidity is too far off, they don't eat. It's very frustrating if you have only one snake eating that certain sized food, and can't offer it to another one, and have to waste that money on a rat you just had to throw away, because your snake refused again.

IMO, Boas are a much better second snake. Mine was. But I also wouldn't recommend a regular RTB. I would recommend one of the dwarf species, like a Hogg Isle, or a Nicuraguan, or a Corn Isle. Yeah, you might pay a little bit more, but it'll be worth it in the long run.

Looking at your last post, I have to say if you want a BP, get it. And yes, a 40L should be fine for the life of the snake.

well il have the viv set and and will have made sure the temps and humidity are right before i get the snake.. and like u say that and so do others but theres lots of people who recommend PB's for me..(im not saying ur wrong tho, like i know u know far more then me but im just saying like theres a lot more people saying its a good idea then people saying its bad )

A 40 gal breeder is perfect. Hobbs, my 10 year old, is perfectly comfortable and then some in hers... Just big enough for two shoebox hides, a 6-qt water tub, and a stick.

If you start with a baby, though, you should start with a smaller enclosure since they're so easily stressed out. Start with a 10 or 20 gallon and upgrade when it outgrows it... Though, you could start with a 40 and just "downgrade" if the snake is too stressed to eat. =)

erm i went to pet store today and nothing is measured in gallons lol can someone tell me what a 40 gallon tank is in like inches or sumthin :p

TBH....... I wouldn't go with a viv for your new purchase. I would use a rub and get the smallest hide the snake can get in. These snakes like privacy and security.
We got over our feeding problems by doing it this way.
BTW...... I have a few Bp and it works with all of them.

i was gunna buy the same viv again as i have for my corn witch is 2ft wide and 18 inches long and 18 inches tall but i was gunna get lots of hides and plants and that would more or less cover the glass walls so it wouldn feel totally exposed.. whats rub? u mean a plastic container thingy ?

Yes........
I wouldn't keep them in a viv, they are not display snakes......
The cheaper option for you would be to buy a nice log and just have that in the viv..... They look the same as Royals hiding, and you don't have any humidity or feeding problems with them..... LOL

i went to reptile haven in Dublin today (a good reptile breeder place :)) and i bought everything i need for a royal and next Friday i'm picking up my 09 normal :D:D it hasn't been sexed yet but the man at the shop said he'd sex it for me on Friday :) its already a good eater and he said if i have any problems to come back and he'd sort me out :D thanks to everyone who gave advice :D:D

With regards to shedding problems and ball pythons...

We have several BP's. All were initially started in 20 gallon long aquariums with screen lids. We had a heat pad and a heat lamp on each.

Sheds were notoriously bad, even with humid hides provided.

When we got our cages from AP this past spring, we were able to move three of our ball pythons into them. Since moving them into these cages, they have had PERFECT sheds. It was an amazing improvement.

So if I were going to reccomend BP's as a second snake for someone who has already been successful for a year or so with a corn, I'd say get an all-plastic cage from a mail order company. It will help a lot.

My second snake was a California kingsnake. Ironically, she is a lot more picky an eater than any of our ball pythons at the moment... I also picked up a Children's python that same day. The Children's has been a great addition... beautiful to look at, stays small enough to live forever in a 2' long viv (if you get a male) and is a hardy eater. He is a little nippy in his cage but is okay once you get him out. If you can obtain one, they may be a viable alternative to a BP.
