Gulf of Mexico oil spill disaster...

Heck, I guess I need to run up my credit cards to their limits..... ;)

Doomsday: How BP Gulf disaster may have triggered a 'world-killing' event
by Terrence Aym

Ominous reports are leaking past the BP Gulf salvage operation news blackout that the disaster unfolding in the Gulf of Mexico may be about to reach biblical proportions.

251 million years ago a mammoth undersea methane bubble caused massive explosions, poisoned the atmosphere and destroyed more than 96 percent of all life on Earth. [1] Experts agree that what is known as the Permian extinction event was the greatest mass extinction event in the history of the world. [2]

55 million years later another methane bubble ruptured causing more mass extinctions during the Late Paleocene Thermal Maximum (LPTM).

The LPTM lasted 100,000 years. [3]

Those subterranean seas of methane virtually reshaped the planet when they explosively blew from deep beneath the waters of what is today called the Gulf of Mexico.

Now, worried scientists are increasingly concerned the same series of catastrophic events that led to worldwide death back then may be happening again-and no known technology can stop it.

The bottom line: BP’s Deepwater Horizon drilling operation may have triggered an irreversible, cascading geological Apocalypse that will culminate with the first mass extinction of life on Earth in many millions of years.

The oil giant drilled down miles into a geologically unstable region and may have set the stage for the eventual premature release of a methane mega-bubble.

Ryskin’s methane extinction theory

Northwestern University's Gregory Ryskin, a bio-chemical engineer, has a theory: The oceans periodically produce massive eruptions of explosive methane gas. He has documented the scientific evidence that such an event was directly responsible for the mass extinctions that occurred 55 million years ago. [4]

Many geologists concur: "The consequences of a methane-driven oceanic eruption for marine and terrestrial life are likely to be catastrophic. Figuratively speaking, the erupting region "boils over," ejecting a large amount of methane and other gases (e.g., CO2, H2S) into the atmosphere, and flooding large areas of land. Whereas pure methane is lighter than air, methane loaded with water droplets is much heavier, and thus spreads over the land, mixing with air in the process (and losing water as rain). The air-methane mixture is explosive at methane concentrations between 5% and 15%; as such mixtures form in different locations near the ground and are ignited by lightning, explosions and conflagrations destroy most of the terrestrial life, and also produce great amounts of smoke and of carbon dioxide..." [5]

The warning signs of an impending planetary catastrophe—of such great magnitude that the human mind has difficulty grasping it-would be the appearance of large fissures or rifts splitting open the ocean floor, a rise in the elevation of the seabed, and the massive venting of methane and other gases into the surrounding water.

Such occurrences can lead to the rupture of the methane bubble containment—it can then permit the methane to breach the subterranean depths and undergo an explosive decompression as it catapults into the Gulf waters. [6]

All three warning signs are documented to be occurring in the Gulf.

Ground zero: The Gulf Coast

The people and property located on the greater expanse of the Gulf Coast are sitting at Ground Zero. They will be the first exposed to poisonous, cancer causing chemical gases. They will be the ones that initially experience the full fury of a methane bubble exploding from the ruptured seabed.

The media has been kept away from the emergency salvage measures being taken to forestall the biggest catastrophe in human history. The federal government has warned them away from the epicenter of operations with the threat of a $40,000 fine for each infraction and the possibility of felony arrests.

Why is the press being kept away? Word is that the disaster is escalating.

Cracks and bulges

Methane is now streaming through the porous, rocky seabed at an accelerated rate and gushing from the borehole of the first relief well. The EPA is on record that Rig #1 is releasing methane, benzene, hydrogen sulfide and other toxic gases. Workers there now wear advanced protection including state-of-the-art, military-issued gas masks.

Reports, filtering through from oceanologists and salvage workers in the region, state that the upper level strata of the ocean floor is succumbing to greater and greater pressure. That pressure is causing a huge expanse of the seabed-estimated by some as spreading over thousands of square miles surrounding the BP wellhead-to bulge. Some claim the seabed in the region has risen an astounding 30 feet.

The fractured BP wellhead, site of the former Deepwater Horizon, has become the epicenter of frenetic attempts to quell the monstrous flow of methane.

The subterranean methane is pressurized at 100,000 pounds psi. According to Matt Simmons, an oil industry expert, the methane pressure at the wellhead has now skyrocketed to a terrifying 40,000 pounds psi.

Another well-respected expert, Dr. John Kessler of Texas A&M University has calculated that the ruptured well is spewing 60 percent oil and 40 percent methane. The normal methane amount that escapes from a compromised well is about 5 percent.

More evidence? A huge gash on the ocean floor—like a ragged wound hundreds of feet long—has been reported by the NOAA research ship, Thomas Jefferson. Before the curtain of the government enforced news blackout again descended abruptly, scientists aboard the ship voiced their concerns that the widening rift may go down miles into the earth.

That gash too is hemorrhaging oil and methane. It’s 10 miles away from the BP epicenter. Other, new fissures, have been spotted as far as 30 miles distant.

Measurements of the multiple oil plumes now appearing miles from the wellhead indicate that as much as a total of 124,000 barrels of oil are erupting into the Gulf waters daily-that’s about 5,208,000 gallons of oil per day.

Most disturbing of all: Methane levels in the water are now calculated as being almost one million times higher than normal. [7]

Mass death on the water

If the methane bubble—a bubble that could be as big as 20 miles wide—erupts with titanic force from the seabed into the Gulf, every ship, drilling rig and structure within the region of the bubble will immediately sink. All the workers, engineers, Coast Guard personnel and marine biologists participating in the salvage operation will die instantly.

Next, the ocean bottom will collapse, instantaneously displacing up to a trillion cubic feet of water or more and creating a towering supersonic tsunami annihilating everything along the coast and well inland. Like a thermonuclear blast, a high pressure atmospheric wave could precede the tidal wave flattening everything in its path before the water arrives.

When the roaring tsunami does arrive it will scrub away all that is left.

A chemical cocktail of poisons

Some environmentalist experts are calling what’s pouring into the land, sea and air from the seabed breach ’a chemical cocktail of poisons.’

Areas of dead zones devoid of oxygen are driving species of fish into foreign waters, killing plankton and other tiny sea life that are the foundation for the entire food chain, and polluting the air with cancer-causing chemicals and poisonous rainfalls.

A report from one observer in South Carolina documents oily residue left behind after a recent thunderstorm. And before the news blackout fully descended the EPA released data that benzene levels in New Orleans had rocketed to 3,000 parts per billion.

Benzene is extremely toxic and even short term exposure can cause agonizing death from cancerous lesions years later.

The people of Louisiana have been exposed for more than two months—and the benzene levels may be much higher now. The EPA measurement was taken in early May. [8]

Doomsday

While some say it can’t happen because the bulk of the methane is frozen into crystalline form, others point out that the underground methane sea is gradually melting from the nearby surging oil that’s estimated to be as hot as 500 degrees Fahrenheit.

Most experts in the know, however, agree that if the world-changing event does occur it will happen suddenly and within the next 6 months.

So, if events go against Mankind and the bubble bursts in the coming months, Gregory Ryskin may become one of the most famous people in the world. Of course, he won't have long to enjoy his new found fame because very shortly after the methane eruption civilization will collapse.

Perhaps if humanity is very, very lucky, some may find a way to avoid the mass extinction that follows and carry on the human race.

Perhaps.

When we were on our way to Repticon in Baton Rouge, I took I-10 because I wanted to see if oil had made it into the estuary yet, which it has. Awesome BP...awesome indeed.

I'll go ahead and report some real facts. It costs $10 million to properly clean up one mile of shoreline. Even AFTER a complete clean up waters cannot be fished for 25 years. The media blackout resulted in the death of a shrimp boat captain recently. After all, who thinks they'll be shot trying to take their boat to auction in Texas just so they can keep their house a while longer. But BP will cover your expenses right?

Wrong.

Get BP the hell out of this country, get them out of our damn waters and force them to pay a reputable contractor to fix it. Yanno...like the Swedes wanted to do for us when it happened. They offered to drill at an angle and implode the well hundreds of feet down.

As for the article..it's somewhat true...methane gas explosions...not so much. 55 million years ago a meteor struck the seabed at a very steep angle in the gulf of mexico, where it broke apart, left little trace it even happened and successfully boiled off 100 billion cubic meters of water in the span of a few seconds. That is what killed off most life on earth. Methane is also HEAVIER than air, it does not dissolve in a water vapor solute...sorry that's just not possible. It will however dissolve in water, and because of this it can and will kill sea life. THAT is a major concern even now. Ryskin is an idiot, no offense to those who think those theories hold water. More toxic gases are present in one day of volcanic eruptions than a year's worth of seabed emissions. By the same sentiment, the SUN will break methane down into it's simpler atomic components. After all it is a naturally combustible molecule that through reaction will breakdown into water, co2...which it'll do over time on its own in the presence of air. Look it up, it's true. And we have plenty of air.

I can explain what ACTUALLY causes such an amazingly huge leak despite the controlled cirumstance...or I can explain why it is near impossible to create a leak like this.

First of all you have to understand how drilling works, or pumping for that matter. First, they drill until geological results from testing indicate they are hitting shale, or the precursors to oil. At this point drilling is stopped so they can install casings and a head. Where then drilling is continued until they break oil. When this happens the casing is reinforced SEVERAL HUNDRED METERS down with a concrete like slurry, this serves as the plug for the well head. Now even the well head has it's own safety measures. Think about this for a second, in the scenario that the government and BP claims happened, with the rig going down they claimed it dislodged the casing and caused it to leak around the piping thus why it's very hard to repair. Theres only one problem with that. During Katrina several rigs either sunk or were completely seperated from their well heads. Did they leak? NO. SO why would it happen now... I've heard bull from improper casing reinforcement to improper casing material...There are only a handful of manufacturers of the stuff and it's nay improbable to get it wrong. Seems awful fishy to me, just saying.

DISCLAIMER: At no time do I make a claim to be an expert in anything, nor do I claim in the above I am absolutely and truly correct. I do however examine the evidence presented and make what I be the best case for what we know.

@army_graywolf I suspect, myself, that the casing was not placed properly or the cement that goes into the bore outside the casing was not done properly & that we have spillage between the layers of casing or the casing & the wellbore itself. Of course, I am not claiming to be an expert either. I doubt, based on what I know, that the casing itself was manufactured improperly or defective. But I am sure human error can lead to not sealing everything properly as the wellbore gets deeper & more casing is put in.

WHY??

BP photoshopping "Crisis Command Center" image!

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/07/20/bps-photoshopped-command_n_652633.html

The latest curio in the ongoing exhibition of BP obfuscation comes via John Aravosis at AmericaBlog, who examined an image from BP's website and determined it to be a fake. The image depicts BP's "Command Center" in Houston, where ever-vigilant BP employees sit in a dark room, monitoring screens. BP's website has been running a photo in which three men appear to be watching a ten-screen display of oil-spill footage. Here's the thing: it's a Photoshop job. And not just a poor one -- a seemingly unnecessary one.

I think next weekend we are gonna go look at the coast for ourselves, the actual coast as if we headed straight south on I-49 and kept going on state roads. Louisiana for what it's worth looks more and more like the state that government forgot. They just leave us for our local PDs to troll fines to fund necessities like street lights and road repair that they can only do on the most horrific roads. It breeds oppressive behavior and makes all kinds of officials get worried about whether they will have jobs next fiscal year. But if we wanted to help clean up, we can't, we aren't allowed to. BP trucks in workers from elsewhere, and from first hand appearances looks like a bunch of foreigners. A friend told me they certainly do not speak english. Of course this isn't the case EVERYWHERE but cost cutting is what it is.

Hey, If you go to the coast, get a bunch of vials of sand, water and oil. In about 25 years people will want to have evidence of this and may pay a pretty penny for it..

Ha. They wont let us near the actual coast. From what I hear you are lucky to even get close to the beach before security forces you to "move along".

It looks like I was wrong & the casing & wellbore are OK as the cap is holding so far. This is a VERY GOOD thing.

Ha. They wont let us near the actual coast. From what I hear you are lucky to even get close to the beach before security forces you to "move along".

You do have to wonder, "security" for whom or what.........

I just got bored of watching all the crap being shoveled around by all sorts of characters. Honestly, does it make any sense at all that "security" forces would be keeping people from the coast yet there are live video feeds of the well head itself?

Please elucidate me here: is BP replacing Hayward and putting someone from the Golf area in his position so they can say "he knows what people are going through" in a effort to get BP a little more of American sympathy?

If they stopped the oil leak today it'd take twenty years of clean up efforts to fix the continued damage and another 50 before were back to pre-spill fishing and shrimping. I have no words for this anymore, if you asked me what to do, I'd do what I've always done, kick their butts the fu%^ out of my waters and get someone who knows what they are doing to fix it. Period.

HAH! If you read what they put in the news papers down here, they are pretty much acting like the crisis is over, "now everyone come on down and visit our beaches!"

How many MILLIONS of gallons of oil and dispersant chemicals are mixed in the waters of the Gulf of Mexico? I guess local government is hoping to grab the dollars from the tourists and hope they don't get sick till they get back home and the checks clear the banks. Just where now did ALL that oil GO?

It's pretty disgusting, actually....... If they think they have an image problem now, wait till all the chickens come home to roost on their pointy little heads.

I'm thinking that when people sign in to beach accommodations, they might want to read the fine print to see if there is a waiver of liability for health problems stemming from exposing yourself to the local waters.

I feel for ya man, but look at it like this, shoreline residents in LA have reported a 300 percent increase in respiratory problems since the spill. That will never be erased from the minds of the locals. Honestly...I am so disgusted I have no intention of paying my taxes this year. I won't pay a freakin' dime until there is a satisfactory response. Photoshopped images, a bullsh&t live feed, they took the oil spill sat photos off google after the spill started to be as big as maryland. Absolutely disguested, almost to that point where I dunno if I want to be a US Citizen anymore. Healthcare bill, bailouts, congressional tax evasion, lies lies and more lies, worse than ever, I didn't buy into this...

Yeah, I hear you. But do you really think the problem is this COUNTRY, or is it just humanity itself (at least the subset that endeavor and yearn to be in POWER) that is the problem? I don't believe that you can escape the true source of the problem. Not while you are alive, anyway, and until proven otherwise, I'm not willing to trust that the alternative is any better.

Yanno what is said. Sometimes too big to fail actually reads as needs to fail to heal the sickness. It is our own ignorance, you're right. Ignorance in the belief there's standing value in a home that has an outstanding bank loan on it. Ignorance in buying anything of substance new, when used is just as well at half the price. Or that somehow it's ok to be a nation of consumerism without really manufacturing goods ourselves. Oh we can sell ourselves on lumber, coal and the auto industry but realistically, our biggest manufacturer is procter and gamble, and that's basically saying alot when toilet paper, paper towels oil of olay and laundry detergent are ranked as our largest domestic production. Shouldn't it include other things like clothes, shoes, toys, or for that matter the majority of things found in walmart? The fact is, we're the fattest, laziest nation in the world who until very recently had the highest GDP, now we're the fattest, laziest, indebtednest, most dependent nation in the world in just a single decade.

If government stated they couldn't provide for food stamps or social security...that alone would destroy our economy beyond repair, and what is that saying when a social service rules a nation's economy?

Really dun get me goin' I get on a roll.

"Too big to fail" really means that all our representatives have financial interests at stake that they don't want to lose.

Just answer this question: Why would anyone spend MILLIONS of dollars to try to get voted into office? Do you think that the PAY is the incentive?

So yeah, now the newspapers are all proclaiming that the Gulf disaster is over with as the well has finally been capped. Yay TEAM!!!

Oh really? Estimates are averaging around 180 MILLION gallons of oil having been spurted into the Gulf of Mexico as well as a substantial quantity of Corexit used as a dispersant. I strongly suspect that all public indications of those figures are WAY, WAY LOW.

Now, WHERE is all that stuff NOW? Just because the dispersants made the oil stay below the surface and mix with the salt water of the Gulf doesn't mean it is GONE from the environment. So WHERE exactly IS all that stuff? I read an article recently stating that the oil did not get into the loop current that would take it out into the Atlantic. Nope, no siree, the Gulf just became a big isolated and self contained fish bowl keeping the oil trapped inside of it, and the oil and chemicals just evaporated into thin air practically over night.

Personally, I have no intention of putting any part of my body into the Gulf of Mexico anytime soon, nor will I eat ANYTHING coming out of those waters for a long time.

So yeah, the Gulf is now clean, so come on down and vacation in Florida! Eat our fresh seafood and swim in the beautiful oil-free waters of the Gulf of Mexico! SPEND YOUR MONEY HERE!! TRUST US!! Just who the HELL can you trust these days with information vital to your health and welfare? :nope:

But don't forget, even if you do get gulf water sickness from swimming in it, obamacare will ensure your are properly triaged and will get you better in no time. (sarcasm).

I think it's much like Katrina, it comes down to economics. Louisiana, Alabama and Florida are DEEP in the red from the recent economic disasters. No federal aid means were left to fend for ourselves and just as likely do our own cleanup on our own time. I'm almost positive this is gonna come down to "charity cleanup" organizations much like Haiti. I can tell you there is oil in Louisiana Estuaries, that there is oil on the shores of LA and MS, that you can see oil sheen in our rainfall...

I just can't justify this sort of thing much longer, I served in the US Army and swore an oath to defend the constitution of the United States against all enemies foreign and domestic, last I checked we have domestic enemies, after all what do you call someone with personal agendas who has no greater purpose but to fill his pockets at the expense of you and yours with no regard for health, safety or truth whatsoever.

Pot is stewing and the time is coming I see more and more TEA stickers and no obama 2012 bumper stickers. When just two years ago it was obama everthing...my how things change when the govt lifts another 15 percent out of your wallet in a real short period of time.

Yeah... I think the point in time may be rapidly approaching when the bulk of the population comes to the realization that a government you don't trust really serves no reasonable purpose for safeguarding the welfare of the country and it's people.

Let's face it, at all levels of government, if someone spends MUCH more than the salary they would receive in the position, what is their TRUE motive for wanting to get into public office?
