Handling~silly question..

Bluebird

lovin my Okeetee boy
My 11 yr old will be home tomorrow ( after being gone for 4 weeks ), and he will find out then that I bought him a corn snake...HE'S GONNA FREAK..lol

I fed the snake on Sunday night, and he pooped last night..YAY! Success!..lol

well, my question is: Is there a time of day ( say evening when its more active ) that's best for him to handle it?

Also, is there a time limit best to cause it the least amount of stress? At least until its more use to being handled? Its 6 months old, and not been handled much at all.

TY for any input! :)

"Least" amount of stress would mean not handling it at all. :D

That said, make sure your son is calm when he holds the snake and doesn't move too quickly. I'd limit handling to a few minutes at a time for the first few sessions and go up from there as the snake gets used to it.

It's been my experience that it's easier to handle a new snake when it is sleepy... during the day. YMMV

Hi.

id like to chip in on this thread. My little experience on handling snakes is to handle during the day. I have allways got mine out during the day when it has been sleeping. He always seems to be a lot calmer and more dosile, when he is exploring his viv ast night i usually leave him to it and just let him get on with his travels. Also if you try to get him out at night when he is active he/she will be a lot more allert and possibly more prone to strike or freak out a bit.

Hm, I do just the opposite. I try to wait until they are awake and out before I take them out- that way I don't feel like I am intruding on their sleep. I have one that begs to come out, a few that will come out if they are active and I invite them out, and a couple that I rarely see- especially Inez- that I _do_ have to dig out.

You just gotta start out slow, and try different times. Some snakes could care less about handling, others you'll have to kind of learn what they will or won't be alright with. There is no rule about when, just pay attention to how s/he responds and it should all work out well in the end.

I personally handle them whenever I'm in the mood to. Sometimes it's in the afternoon, sometimes at night. I've found that pretty much all of them don't seem to care either way.
