"Herpmaster" Software?

I have seriously been thinking of creating some simple programs (Excel, Access) for record keeping because the paper trail just ain't doing it for me any more. This seems like a shortcut that would be worth it for the amount of time it would save me. Wondering if anyone has tried it?

I use excel to record the days my snake fed and if she missed and feed etc, but i only have one corn so i don't know how it'd work if your using it for a lot of snakes.
I haven't had my corn long so i'm not exactly experienced. I just use it so i know when she needs a feed and some other stuff :shrugs:

Carol,

I use something similar called Hungry Herps. I looked around for a while and It was the best software out there. I also just downloaded the Herp Master software and it is sooo slow. I tried numerous times and I just can't do anything with the program.

Hi Carol! :wavey:
I have the trial version of Herpmaster....I am trialing both it and the Degei database.
Herpmaster seems to be much more involved with a lot of caresheets, genetics, planetary climate zones (yup) :eek1: etc. It's very specific and involved. The more I use it, the more I like it, but it's a little intimidating at first. I will say that their customer support has been excellent to me...I had trouble downloading the trial version. I e-mailed them and received a response within minutes. When that didn't work, a second e-mail (I was feeling like a pest trying to get free software to work) was sent. Again, they e-mailed me right back, and that fixed the problem. They have even done follow up to see if I like it. I'm not sure if I NEED all the extras it has, but they're nice.
Degei is just basically a database for feeds/sheds/breeding. If I do change over, it's gonna be a B&&cH having to copy all of my records.
If all you want is a record keeping method, and no 'bells and whistles', I'd go with the free Degei model..Really easy to keep track of your collection. Nice 'cage cards' and lifetime activity reports.

Hope this helps?

Carol, I looked at the website, but didn't want tp part with the cash.LOL
I think there is a free trial version there for download.
Have you seen the "Herp Man" program created by Marcel Poots?
It's free and it's pretty cool. There are several fields of Data you can enter, such as Name and Species, DOB. an egg counter field, medication field, a genetics wizard and a entertainment field where you can play a version of Columns if you get bored!

Oh yeah--I forgot--To activate the FULL version of Degei is $20.... Herpmaster is $149 (gulp). :sidestep:

Thanks I'll try my options, but I was looking for something pretty extensive. Honestly, if some one emailed me asking the genetics of a snake they bought from me 3 years ago, I may have an answer, I may not. At the time I relied on my memory, which was fully functioning at the time. However, as time has passed, more snakes have come in and out of my collection and a medical condition is affecting my memory. I want to get something that will track hubandry records, but I was also looking at it for the "family tree" abilities and that the fact that you can punch in a certain snake and get it's complete history, breeding, care, lineage... all sorts of stuff that could be very useful if something were to "crop" up.

It's on "sale" right now for $79. Considering what I get paid per hour at work, there is no way I could put the hours in creating something similar myself and make it worth while. So the sale price sounds reasonable to me. :shrugs:

With Degei, you have the option of placing an animal on an 'inactive' list. All of your records remain intact (breeding/feeds/lineage/breeder of origin etc) and you can pull them up as needed. I honestly think I will stick with Degei. I'm still trying to sort through all of my paper scraps and index cards to get them INTO the database.

OOPS---I got an e-mail about that. You're right. $79
They have a free trial, so download it and see if you like it...That way you know before you buy. I think that price is good until the end of July?

OK, so for those of you who have tried different ones, do any of them have a system for keeping track of your customers and which snakes they have?

Carol,

I believe Hungry Herps does. I paid 30.00 for the program and I love it! They also have a free 30 day trial.

Here is a link that shows just about everything it does.

I checked out the website for Hungrey Herps, I didn't see a listing for family trees and lineage record keeping, does it do this as well? Thanks.

I didn't see that Carol. It doesn't mean that they don't have it or won't add it to there next update. They already added 2 updates since I have had the program and they said if you wanted to add anyhting to the program to email them about the addition.

It also keeps records of all the customers you sell to along with any other info you wanted to add. IE: Invoices, payments, addresses etc.

Just a couple notes about the Herpmaster software:

1- Whomever said it runs slow was making quite an understatement. WOW. It uses 136 Megs of memory before you even do anything. (Why?)

2- The genetics features will be useless for corns, it only recognizes one letter per locus, so it cannot handle motley/stripe or ultra/amel.

That would be me Chuck. I used it for a total of five mins before I uninstalled it.

Thanks so much guys! I really appreciate everyones help. The two major things that I need help with is recording family trees and keeping track of customers. At this point in time index cards still do the job for the breeding/feeding/problem aspect of everything. But trying to keep track of customers and snake lines is a bear on paper. It looks like one is better at customers and one is better at family trees. But one is $60 more on sale and slow.....I don't like slow. We are still on dial-up at work and me hates it. :uzi:
HHMMM... choices, choices.

Actually it looks like degei does a pretty good job at tracking both. I couldn't find Marcel's program. :shrugs:
