Hatching... then dead?? *DISTRESSING PIC*

Again, I'm so sorry, bitsy.
I was recently reading a post (Danny's maybe) about using a flashlight against the eggs to see if any movement occured. Might raise your hopes a bit if you knew some of the eggs still had life in them. Best of luck.

Why exactly are you using an aquarium thermometer (a not so good one at that)? Investing in a good digital thermometer would be wise so that in the future you know if it's a heat spike that caused the problem.

Thanks guys. I was having such a good year up until now - four clutches hatched successfully so far and a great year for non-feeders (i.e. very few).

I guess it's only fair that Murphy should have a go, but it's heartbreaking to see them get this far and then not make it.

While it sucks, be glad it's a clutch of amels and snows and not a clutch of hypo stripe lav bloods or something. Last year sucked bad enough, but cracking open a container of dead snakes consisting of 3 hypo sunkisseds and a handful of sunkisseds sure sucked a big one.

As I said in my original post, I check the temps regularly with an infra-red thermometer. I also used that to set up. The old aquarium thing is in there just as a quick indicator of potential trouble when I first open the lid - I don't rely on it.

Still no more pippies.

Aye, true enough. My Caramel Mots and Butter Mots came through with flying colours. Even my first-timer's Stripes had a 100% hatch rate and are eating like piglets. The Amels & Snows were hardly the moneyspinners, but even so...

But that won't help you at all to determine if their was or wasn't a temperature spike when you weren't their measuring the temperatures. They make digital thermometers that track that information (and they're pretty cheap too).

It won't help me now either. The stat is in the bin (with extreme predjudice!). I don't see that hindsight would be of much use in future - a max/min thermometer will just confirm what killed the eggs. What I'd need is something that could predict a one-off event on a faulty stat, so that I can prevent it happening.

As there have been no other pippies and the remaining eggs were starting to smell this morning, there's no further need to investigate. I think the only possible cause could be a heat spike.

No, it won't help you now...But it would provide information for future clutches if this happens again.

Also, the higher end thermostats have heat spike warnings on them. I believe they beep or blink or something along those lines.

Bitsy, having lost an entire incubator full of eggs ready to pip to a heat spike (faulty Helix thermostat) this season I kinda know what you must be feeling and I would not wish it on anyone. I'm truly sorry for this unfortunate event. I'm just trying to think of next year.
Terri

Sorry to hear about the losses, that really bites- regardless of what morph it was that was expected. Sucks that it sounds as if the rest of the eggs went bad as well.
