Right. You just accept something is 'the right way' then use that for 10 years. That doesn't make you any better a herper then someone with 3 months experience who is questioning things.

Just that is widely accepted doesn't make it so.

True. Back in the 17th century it was widely accepted that the earth was the center of our solar system. A lone man said that the sun was center of the solar system. The church condemned him to die for his heresy.

I'm not trying to argue with anyone or say they are wrong, but lets think about this: We are talking about snakes being "happy" in their viv's. Now, if I were a snake, I wouldn't be happy in ANY viv, whether it be big or small or nicely decorated or plain with a single hide, paper towels, and a water dish. We must remember that snakes are still wild creatures, and no amount of space or lack of space is going to change that. However, if their basic needs are met, then they are as happy as any other snake in captivity. Just a note, but I've had snakes in sterilites and a snake in a larger glass viv, and they were/are all very active: They were all trying to escape. Snakes just do that. They don't want to be cramped in any size viv any more than we would want to be cramped in a house all the time.

You're made the assumption that I haven't used both types of enclosures. The assumption is wrong. I've made an informed decision based on my husbandry experiences using different setups, my personal observations of the impact of captive conditions on reptiles, and the knowledge I've gained from seeing snake behavior in a natural environments. Can you make these same claims?? IMO that does make me "a better herper" than someone that has done none of these things. :)

I think you all will never make any agreement. Why? Because it's like you are speaking different languages.
Flygning is trying to simulate natural habitat for his snakes, assure them space to walk freely etc.
You guys are trying to make your snakes live in best possible conditions, but limited. Limited because of limited space. mostly. For you those conditions are enough to make snakes eat, shed, breed, just live :dancer:
Flygning is trying to give his snakes sth more.
Not saying you are hurting your snakes, don't get me wrong.
And sorry for my english.

Oh one more thing to khaman.
In 16th century Copernicus was the first who claimed Sun is in the centre, not Earth, he was a Pole ( like me ) and he died in his bed.
You were thinking about Galileo? He only confirmed this theory and for that was :flames: :devil01:

Very true Copernicus was one of the first to claim this. But due to the printer taking some liberties with his manuscript was never accepted as fact just what might be. I was referring to Galileo who did much to prove the Copernican theory.

Oh. And how did you get that knowledge? Watching crocodile hunter or when your out in your backyard?

It's amazing what you can learn when you don't spend all your time trolling on a forum. ;)

My corn snakes feed/shed/breed pretty easily no matter which type of enclosure they have. I use breeder racks and have two large display vivs in the living room. However~ the Ball pythons (a boid rather than a colubrid~ but still a snake) will go off feed if housed in too large an enclosure. I have BIG girls who will only feed if housed in sterilites smaller than I would think is comfortable.

Just an observation on behaviour. Corns seem to be very forgiving of environmental conditions~ but not all snakes are~ and it is clear that some prefer a tight enclosure.

I'd really have to agree with CAV. If you spend any substantial amount of time watching (or searching for) snakes in the wild, you'd be hard pressed to find just one example of a snake out "having fun" or "enjoying it's habitat". A happy snake is a sedentary snake. An active snake is a hungry, uncomfortable, or discontent snake.

One other thought to keep in mind....if it weren't for breeders maximizing their space and resources with the use of rack systems, all of us hobbyists would be paying MUCH more for our snakes. If you the snake owner wants to provide their pets with large spacious naturalistic enclosures, don't knock the breeders who are making those pets so readily available....think about it :)

Happy Herpin' everyone :crazy02:

Also I think it's important to point out that there is no such thing as an emotionally happy corn snake. The best you can hope to have is a relatively stress free corn. And I think the best way to achieve that is by providing the most secure environment for your corn, meaning one with modest amounts of open space and plently of hiding opportunities. To me, a rubbermade seems like it might resemble the worlds largest hide with more room than most but still enclosed enough to bring security (and a water dish!). Thats just an opinion though, i use viv's anyways.

hiya :wavey:

I'm planning on building/buying a large viv for my corn with lots of things in it, hides, plants etc. and when I get fed-up with the way it looks, I will move the furniture around. Probably buy a few more bits for it, change the lighting and/or background. I never had a dolls house!!!

As long as I take good care of my snakes' needs and look after her/him as best I can I'm sure I will have lots of fun with the viv. :grin01:

thank you

And once again you try to undermine everyone who disagrees with you. May i note there is a rule against insulting? I am *not* a troll  I am a member just like you. And i have as much right to voice my opinion as anyone else.

I've send a complaint to this forums administrator. You've insulted me one time to many.

I shouldn't say it~ but I can't help it~

People who live in glass houses..................

LOL!

Jicin,

What is insulting is the manner in which you consistently bash others that don't agree with your "advice", especially when it comes from the members with actual herp experience.

The opinions that you've provided here have in many cases been reckless, irresponible and occasionally dangerous. A short recap of a few of them:

1. You advised a new keeper, in a very warm region, to put a heat pack in with his snake while taking a car trip this week.

2. You have posted nonsense like "Belly heat may dry out the pooh inside the snake blocking things up."

3. In three months you have collected enough info to be an expert on housing snakes together: "Personally i've decided to take the risk....Canibalism only occures in times of high stress and it pretty rare even then. Pics i saw here of canibalism were all in tiny plastic cups."

4. Your an expert in snake behavior: "A little stress isn't that bad."

Evedently, I'm not the only one that you have "issues" with

1. "Are you trying to pick a fight with me?"

2. "I haven't said that."

3. "I've added you to my ignore list."

4. "I will most definately not apologise"

5. "I find it insulting"

6. "Not here to sweet talk people"

Jicin, I could careless if you agree with me or not. However, I will continue to point out responses from you or any other member that I believe to be unhealthy and/or dangerous advice.

WOW, This thread is getting very interesting. I bet the person who first asked the question didn't expect it to go this far.

All I can say is that I use sterlite tubs for most of my collection also, and the snakes don't seem to mind. I know I am not in their head and can't feel what they do, but some of them seem to like it better being more enclosed than in a big glass aquarium where can be seen all the time. (although some of mine are nosey and like the glass) If they are feeding, shedding, breeding and doing other snakey things with no problems then I believe that they are content. :)

One thing to keep in mind, is that these snakes that we are all talking about are captive bred, and don't really know anything else. They are born and raised in captivity, and are used to us caring for them and seeing to their needs. This is just my 2 cents.

Your wrong in all your points CAV. Once again i'll file a complaint about you. I shall not even get into an argument with you anymore. I'll let the admin handle this. You should stop acting like this is your forum and 'welcome my participation' or not.

Though i am curious how long it took you to look up all these links and took them out of their context to make me look bad. Wich they aren't if you take the time to read. You even find aplogies from me from misprashing or wrongly understand things. I even see you post from you like you are the administrator of this forum. Not another member.

It just really suprises me of how much time you are willing to spent trying to start a flamewar with me. How mean and low of you. But like i said, i will not go into that. I do not wish to start a war here so i will not take the bait and insult you back. But i do feel your trying to make me look bad and i will say that is not true. Please try and take a few breaths before you call people trolls and try to start some hetze wich only costs you time and efford but acomplish nothing other then making yourself look bad.
