Hay for snakes

Tim66/corns

I have no Accent
I work in a Pet Retail store (Hard Goods only, no pets), and was wondering while I was putting out hay the other day if my corn snakes would like it to crawl through & hide in along with their regular hides. Think this is a good idea? The hay is fresh & dry and you can realy fluff it up. Any feedback would be great on the pro's/cons.

I use chopped barley straw as my substrate because I can only get aspen or beech woodchips in small bags locally. I've been using it for a couple of years with no problems, it fluffs up for tunneling really well. I tried hay but found any water spillage meant mould grew really quickly.

Thanx diamondlil,
That's a good idea with straw instead of hay. And that is why I was thinking of hay in the first place, cause I though they would like tunneling through it.

It could be dusty, too. You don't want to cause any respiratory problems in an animal with one lung.

WOW thanx Nanci.
I learned something new! I did not know they only had one lung. But no the hay I sell is very fresh & dry. In fact it still has that sweet smell & sometimes I can't resist putting a piece in my own mouth. Reminds me of my barn days. But I just though they would have a good time crawling through it & what a natural hide it would make.

With hay, I'd worry about tics. My little sister got one from playing in the hay that burrowed into the back of her neck and had to be surgically removed.

Do you have a large freezer? Someone here suggested freezing the aspen prior to using it in the viv. I don't know if it's widely done, but it made sense to me at the time so I've been doing it with each new bag. It would kill off any nasty crawly things in there.

Oh, but did you realize that mice love to come to new homes via bails of straw?

I actually microwave my bedding. I put a cup of water in the center and put it in for 2 minutes. I've seen roaches go "POP" before, and it stunk like a hobo, though.
