Hello from Western Oklahoma

New member
I've been on this forum for a few months, but haven't taken the time to post here. This year (2015) was my first year breeding and was mostly successful. I am 27 years old and live in a rural area of Western Oklahoma. I've just gotten into Corns in the past couple of years, but am all in with the project. I have a Facebook page, Cornbred Reptiles, where I prefer to post pictures if you care to see anything or follow my work. I will also do my best to keep up here as well.

Currently my collection includes:

MALE (these are my juvenile, subadult, and adult or 2015 purchased males)
Motzart: he is either an Ultramel or Lava Motley...or something entirely different, but we're still working on it
Yeti: Blizzard het Anery
Casper: Ghost
Jazz: Hypo Amel Motley het Anery
Captain: Coral Ghost
Damon: Tessera het Amel
Hodor: Honey
Mushu: Motley het Lavender, Anery

FEMALES (these are my juveniles, subadults, adults and 2015 purchased females)
Ziggy: Classic zig zag
Amelia: Amel het Anery
Watermelondrea: Fluorescent Amel
Charlotte: Charcoal (possible low expression Masque) het Anery
Norma: ? Not sure here either...either an Ultra based morph or a Lava.
Lilith: Bloodred (Diffused and Masque)
Veronica: Believed to be an Upper Keys normal het Caramel, Lavender, Amel, Motley
Hydee: Hypo Bloodred
Thora: Hypo het Amel, Motley, Anery
Tessa: Tessera
Mystique: Blue Motley

HOLDBACKS:
1.1 Snow het Charcoal
0.1 Amel het Charcoal, PH Anery
0.1 Classic het Anery, Charcoal, Hypo
1.1 Anery het Charcoal, Hypo
1.1 Fluorescent Amel het Charcoal
1.0 Ultra/Ultramel Anery or Ice (not sure yet)
1.2 Ultra/Ultramel/Lava ?
1.0 Masque het Diffused, Motley, and Ultra/Amel/Lava?
0.1 Classic het Diffused, Motley, and Ultra/Amel/Lava?

It was a fun first year for me with A LOT of surprises. The biggest being the discovery of either Ultra/Ultramel or Lava in the mix. I've been in circles trying to nail down the genetics, but can't seem to get 100% confident answers all around. Several of my snakes proved to have some hidden hets that I was pleased to see. My plans next year are still being worked out, but I'm excited to see what I can do.

Thanks for looking!

help

Was just curious as to how long I can feed my baby cornsnakes pinkie mice. They are about 2-4 grams. (The mice) When the snake gets larger can I continue feeding them the pinkies just more in quantity? They were quite expensive so it would be nice not to waste them. Until they are used will my snakes be OK or will they be lacking anything specific ???

Not sure why your post is on my thread, but yes...feeding them a higher number of pinkies will work until you've run out or can get bigger mice.

Jessmarie ... welcome! Cool to see your breeding went well. You can post some pics here too, as well as your website. It will be fun to see some of them! And as for the other post, well, some people just jump in where ever in hopes of getting an answer. It does work better though, to start your own thread in the correct place. Nice of you to help.

Thanks kdickens! I don't have a website yet, just a Facebook page. I use a camera for my photos and have to recompress them to get them to post here and sometimes it's just not worth the time it takes. Haha. But I am willing to share when needed/wanted!

Welcome the forum! Your breeding projects sound very cool - I'd love to see some pics of the snows if you get a chance to upload!

Welcome to the forum. After a season of breeding you come with a lot of experiences to share! Glad you are here. I'll go check out your Facebook, though we do love to see pics here (hint, hint) ;)

Hello and welcome! Another lazy-mode option I prefer is uploading to Imgur instead, since it resizes automatically. You can even choose "medium" or "large thumbnail" for the perfect forum-appropriate size.

Welcome to the forum!!! Would love to also see pictures of your bunch. Looks like you have a nice collection. :wavey:

Snow babies

Welcome the forum! Your breeding projects sound very cool - I'd love to see some pics of the snows if you get a chance to upload!

Hey there! Here are my two Snow holdbacks: Sansa and Slagathor

Breeding males

I'll just start at the top of my list and go down...
The first 3 are the 3 males I bred this year. Motzart, Yeti, and Casper.
Again:
Motzart is a Motley het Anery...and he's either Ultra/Ultramel or Lava...but future breeding trials should answer that for sure.
Yeti is a *blizzard* het Anery...he appears Blizzard, but since he gave us Snow offspring, we aren't positive that he's Homo Charcoal. He likely is, but until I breed him to my Charcoal female next year, I can't say 100% for sure.
Casper is a Ghost. He's got some Pastel-esque coloring to him, but since I didn't get him directly from someone who was working on that, I hesitate to label him as such.

These are 4 of the females that I bred this year
Ziggy - as far as I know, just a Classic Zigzag
Amelia - Amel het Anery...super pretty and made some really bright babies
Norma - ??? thought she was just a pretty normal, but she made a whole clutch of Ultra/Ultramels or Lavas...soo? I hope to breed her to my Blizzard male or another homo amel next year to figure out some answers
Charlotte - Charcoal het Anery, poss low expression masque

2 Upcoming breeder males

These two will hopefully breed for me this next season.
Jazz (Hypo Amel Motley het Anery)
Captain (Coral Ghost...though some question if it's just a red factor ghost or if it is, in fact, Strawberry Anery...breeding trials will tell!)

I've had a lot of interest in the strawberry gene lately, so I am very interested in the results you get. :) He's gorgeous!

Thanks! I never had any reason to question whether he was Strawberry Anery or not. As far as I was concerned, the breeder was right when he labelled it as that. But, I posted a picture of him on a Facebook page and one of the more wellknown breeders swore up and down that it was just a red factor (or something similar) ghost. The only thing I might have to test it against next year is a Hypo Bloodred female...but I'm not sure how confident I am in ID'ing Hypos against Hypo Strawberrys...

You might be better off outcrossing to a normal and pairing the babies. That's what I intend to do at some point. If he is strawberry and not red factor, just shy of 1/4 of your F2s should be strawberries. Otherwise won't all the F1 babies carry red factor?

I saw a purported red factor anery once. It was more of a dark brown with very black saddles, almost like a heavily darkened version of a nice German-line kastanie.
