My name is Keegan and I got my anerythristic hatchling yesterday. Her name is Naga, and she has settled down very quickly.
I have wanted a corn for over ten years now, but my mother is terrified of snakes. We found Naga in the driveway last night (we live in rural Virginia) and decided that since I'd been wanting a corn, I could keep her. Not to mention the fact that we have a pair of red shouldered hawks in the back who'd love to have her for breakfast.. anywho.. I don't know if it's "okay" that my Naga was born outside, but she seems quite happy in her 20 gal tank. :)
She had her first pinkie about three hours ago, and it only took about 2 minutes to get her to eat. She's much easier to feed than my old friend's corn, and a lot quieter.
My mom is still amused that after special ordering me a beanbag chair for my birthday tomorrow, my favorite "present" is Naga.
I will take pictures later tonight, when I handle Naga again. She's curled up by the heat mat right now, and I don't want to disturb her.

Welcome! Just a heads up...the general rule is to wait 48 hours after feeding before you do any handling. Playing with the snake too soon could cause a regurge and thats never good. Congrats on the find! We all hope to see pictures soon...

All right.. I'd heard some conflicting advise on how long to wait, but I knew I needed to wait at least a few hours. Thanks!
Is it okay that I had her in my lap when I fed her? She LOVED it when I dragged the warmed pinkie in front of her, and it's hard to do when she's contained.
She's up and moving now, so I might get a few pictures.

We find adult black rat snakes a lot, but those guys are nasty.
Naga is pretty young, and I'm wondering where the clutch is.. I'm glad I was allowed to keep her, because the hawks would have gotten her in a heartbeat. What a find.. damn. She went across the driveway just as my parents got home.

Since you just got a new snake..A good way to start off would be to let your snake get used to it's new home...Leave it be for about 5-6 days...Feed it a pinkie once more and wait 2 days..Then you can start slow gentle handling..Start at short handling times at first like 10 minutes for the first handling..and slowly increase from there...Also make sure you do your research on the proper care for corns :0) Check out the FAQ area of the forum...It has a lot of great info for people with a first snake..Congrats again and can't wait to see pics :0)

You don't have an edit.
I've been in the woods all over Prince William County, nuthin'. I've seen lots of snakes in different areas; black rats, water snakes, little ringnecks, never a corn.
Maybe you should look around?

It's freakin' HARD not to handle her, especially since she's so sweet. I've been trying, though. ;)
I've had snakes before, just not in my home and for more than a month. I "freshened up" on my research last night, and bought her a heat mat today. Pinkies are damn expensive.. I'm getting a breeding pair of mice next weekend. I breed dwarf hamsters, but those are my babies..

She did NOT like the flash, but I can't get a decent picture without it.. now I feel bad.. poor baby :(

If she's not anery, let me know, but I'm almost positive she is.

She is sooo pretty in person.. the pictures don't do her justice!
She rattled ONCE, after I took the last picture. Besides that, she hasn't rattled, struck, or anything since I've gotten her. She's more tame than any other snake I've ever met..
She's also content to coil around my wrist and look at me. It's cute.. I'd worry if she wasn't perky and moving around, but she is very active.

She's pretty nice looking in pics, too. Take Maize411's "411", take it slow; you'll have it for a while, plenty of handling time.

I'm going to try not to handle her until Friday, after I get home from the Cure concert I'm going to..
I might be tempted to stroke her, though. She's so silky-sleek. :)

Your snake's not going anywhere, no big deal if you just watch and don't touch. You need a name for it, even if they don't answer to it, it helps for keeping records. I usually suggest a name like "Alan" when people ask, 'cause it's a great name.

What a great find! I didn't realize you could just "find" a wild anery corn so easily. I'm jealous because it's rare to see many snakes around here. I have seen many black ratsnakes and garters but that's about it.

One of my friends thinks she might be a milk snake, but I don't think so. He was also surprised that I found a corn snake at all, let alone an anery. Any chance she IS a milk?
Naga was sleeping on the rock next to her heat mat this morning, and poked her head up when I looked in.

Hey, welcome! Naga is a cute little snake. And, from the pics she sure doesn't look like a milk snake to me. Definitely looks like an anery corn.

Congrats on your find! There's a lot of great info on this forum about caring for Naga. I really recommend Kathy Love's book. Don Soderberg's is good, too. You can get them online at the authors' websites (www.cornutopia.com and www.cornsnake.net/ respectively). They come autographed if you order from the authors.

Since Naga came from the great outdoors, it would be a good idea once she's settled in with you to take her to a herp vet for a checkup. Most wild things have a parasite load.

Thanks everyone. :)

I'm really concerned that she's not warm enough; the heat mat is barely warm to the touch and doesn't seem to keep that end of the tank warm AT ALL. We set up a halogen (not meant for herps but it works) except I have to watch it constantly because it gets REALLY hot. I'm going out tomorrow after school for either another heat mat or a lamp and some strip thermometers.. recommendations for heating? I keep Naga in my room, so I need something that will keep her warm enough at night without keeping me awake.
I measured her, and she's " long. Should I feed her two pinkies? I can't even see a slight bulge anymore from last night's pinkie.
Her texture is also different.. she sounds.. hollowish(?) and feels slightly rubbery. I've never had this happen before.. should I be worried?
