help a newguy with EVERYTHING please

well i dont know how, but i got into reptiles recently, i am broken between a cornsnake(i WAS going to pick a milk snake) and a gecko what do you guys think, im going to get a standard 10 gallon for 2 years and when i goto collage ill upgrade its area but durring those 2 years ill make sure he (or she) has alot of outside time and space to roam. i have 1 cat and 1 dog in the house i donot intend to have the snake and or gecko meet with them simply because the cat took down a crow from the sky effortlessly(hes a hunter). and the dog would be hostile(egotistical toy poodle)by barking at it when shown in person. what do you people think, also what will baby cornsnakes eat durring its first few weeks of life, i heard that crickets are the way to go

Corn snake,

i was torn between the two myself, but lizards ain't as entertaining or interesting as snakes, so i guess a corn snake would be best, i would never have even thought of getting a lizard if i knew snakes were so Awesome, and never feed a snake crickets, or so Ive herd, pinky's!

I think your best bet would be to do alot of research on this site.
This site has a vast amount of information at your disposal.
Just do a search on whatever question you may have and you will be sure to find your answer to most anything you may wonder about. And what you can't find answers to, just go to the correct category and post a question there. You will be more apt to get prompt answers.. Just my 2cents worth

Well, i suggest dont get a baby for your first, there not fully trained and if you dont have any experience with snakes it can be hard,

i got mine at 1.8 years old, hes tame, and hes a great first pet!

Hatchlings are great! My little snake is so curious and friendly. She seems to adore human contact, and she is small enough that i can handle her and even my young daughter can handle her with no issues. Plus, we both get the benefit of watching this little creature grow up with us. We have the chance to learn it's personality inside and out, and we can be assured of every aspect of it's care, because we have been a part of it's entire life, except for the first few month at the breeder's and pet store.

It's akin to choosing a full grown adult dog, or a puppy, without all the training that is associated with a puppy.

Forget everything you know about establishing connections with traditional pets like cats or dogs. Reptiles, whether snakes or lizards, don't have the same highly developed emotional centers of the brain as mammals do and aren't likely to bond with you in the same way.

My personal observation is hatchlings are fun to watch grow up, but juveniles and adults tend to be calmer and more confident. Because of how I interact with my snakes, I actually prefer my older snakes to the smallest babies.

And like several others have recommended, get either the Kathy Love manual or the Don Soderberg book and read up on care and keeping - preferably before you get the snake.

hey thanks,. i probably will get the books, but i have been looking at prices of some and why are some snakes $1000(vmsherp) i know alot about the genes but is it just a rare color combo? anyways i think im going to build my cage out of wood(probably metal or wood) i hear that pinewood is not good but its all i have so ill coat it with something(plastic metals, something safe
