I wasn't refering to water, he said and I quote "if it's fit for humans to drink, then it's generally OK for snakes." If you don't find something wrong with that, then oh well.

Could you elaborate on how this rule of thumb would not work? I am one of those who don't find anything wrong with that.

And the extreme end... If it's okay for humans it's okay for our pets. Period. Therefore we shouldn't buy dog food anymore we should just give it pizza instead. Or give our cats tuna and milk. Why can't a snake eat candy?

Now everyone knows that's a HUGE extreme and that if people really thought like that they'd have some pets with serious issues (especially the cat with tuna and milk, omg kitty poo). That's not what Bitsy was saying. If it's safe for humans to drink the water, then it's safe for the snakes to drink the water, THAT is what Bitsy was saying.

As for the water here, I grew up on well water, however my fiance refuses to drink the well water. I do like bottled water, but mostly for the 'put it in the fridge and keep it cool' factor, though you can get a water bottle and do that quite easily. However, since we tend to buy gallons of spring water for ourselves, we usually just give it to the snakes.

I've also known some areas that have well water to have problems, such as too much iron, cholestoral (where my dad lives this is a big problem, leave the cup sit for a while and you'll find white stuff at the top of the water), I don't know if that would harm a snake, but for me I just worry too much about my babies as is. :shrugs: It keeps me feeling confident if I know they're getting the best stuff. If I had some GSE I might change to tap though, as it's supposed to kill any bad bacteria.

Oh and bitsy I hope you know the first part of my post wasn't me being snotty to you, I was making a point in an attempt to agree with you. I just want us to be clear. :)

If you grew on well water, I don't see a problem in giving it to the snakes, but again, if giving bottled water to your babies is what make you have a good night of sleep, go for it. :)

As far as the reply to Bitsy's post, it is part of the "forum etiquette learning curvature" (1,652 posts Vs. 19). ;)

On the extreme end, some animals do eat "people" food. Not pizza but pizza isnt healthy for anyone.

My dogs are on the barf diet and so are my cats. They eat chicken, duck, quail, fish and rabbit....and all the pieces in between.

I use the "if its safe for me, its safe for them" method with their raw meats in terms of spoiled. If I wouldnt eat it, I dont give it to them.

I'll be the first to admit that I give my dog 'scraps'... she usually gets a piece of pizza crust on pizza night from me and her 'daddy' both. Or a piece of this or that as a treat. I wouldn't order in chinese and get the dog her own serving of mongolian beef.

Actually it was really funny, the other night we were making dinner and my fiance dropped some butter on the floor... the dogs jumped on it and surprisingly snarfed it... Which was odd and somewhat off-topic.

As for cats eating tuna and milk... I'm trying not to be explicit, but the milk especially can give them the runs if they have too much of it. :awcrap:

I know my pets function best on their proper food, though when our girl dog was sick we had to mix her dry food in with baby food in order to get her to eat (she doesn't know that her medicines were in the baby food hahaha).

I'm not sure about the initial regurge, but when a snake does that more than twice, Kathy Love recommends waiting at least 10 days before trying to feed again, she also uses Grapefruit Seed Extract ( in the water), after losing a hatchling on poor advice and feeding it again and again ( it died) I found her recommendation and it worked!!!. The reason to wait and use the GSE is so the stomach can re-generate it's Flora/Fauna bacteria that aids in digestion. The snake kept regurging because there wasn't enough of this to break it down. Just a suggestion for any further regurges.

LOL! The subject was drinking water and I'm afraid I was referring solely to water in my post - sorry for the misunderstanding. Perhaps for clarity my reply should have read:

"...if water is fit for humans to drink, then it's generally OK for snakes."

I'm not about to recommend transferring your Corn to Gatorade, Earl Grey Tea or skinny moccacinos! Just to be extra clear, Corns drink water, and water only (except for the very louche ones, who enjoy an absinthe now and again...*)

Also, please note careful use of the word "generally". Some folks here don't feel comfortable using tap water and prefer to use bottled water or add a tap water conditioner. Taking extra care is never wrong if that's what you want to do. It's just not necessary in my experience, in my area, with my tap water supply.

And for the record, I'm a girlie.
