They aren't poisonous so feel free to eat all you want. Oh, they're not venomous either. ;)

Grays are similar to corns and are commonly kept in captivity. Their temperament may vary quite dramatically.

lol sorry about "poisonous" im still learning snake vocab haha. Hes really cute though, would it be a bad idea to keep it? if I do keep it as a pet.. are there any neccessary precautions or special things i should do to make it more comfortable, and healthy? any info would be great!!

I'm not the spelling guru but I can't let that one slip by...........

TEXAS

is the correct spelling. :)

Elaphe obsoleta spiloides (Gray Rat Snake) and Elaphe obsoleta lindheimeri (Texas Rat Snake) are different sub-species. The Mississippi River is generally considered the range divider between the two sub-species. Texas Rats tend to be a little larger and have more brown, yellow or orange in the base with a dark brown head and saddles.

hey mbdorfer - what type of snake is that in your avatar?

so its a gray rat snake? just want to be 100% positive before sticking my hand in the container at all in a day or so so hes had time to calm down.

this will be really cool if it is, they sell rat snakes (dunno what kinds though) for like $79 at the store i buy mice from for my corns. I was JUST looking at them today, they look really nice.

The snake in my avatar is bogertophis subocularis Trans Pecos Rat Snake. Yes, I'm sure the snake you found is a grey rat. They can be as docile as corns, or as mean as sin. At that size, there's a real good chance it will mellow out. My limited experience with them is that they are generally calmer than yellow rats, but not quite as calm as corns. Good luck with him

Definitely a grey rat snake!

Here's a couple of pictures of a White Oak Phase Grey Rat Snake that is in my collection:

any tips for keeping him? when would be fine to hold/feed him?

ive learned quite a bit from these forms and the corn snake manual, but if theres any specific difference in care for rat snakes please let me know!!

i don't know about grey rats but just do a google on grey ratsnake caresheets and you should find info on husbandry and all the essentials. also since it is wild caught i would take it to the vet to check for parasites if you are planning on keeping it.
