HELP! little white mites!

Ahhhh, Wth. So I did a little reading and this is what I've done so far.
1. Took out the log, stick, rock, and plants and cleaned those off, i will be leaving those outside in the dry Vegas air for a week
2. Gave rumps a bath (he didn't appreciate that)
Threw the moss I had in there away! Outside!

My question is this. Can I take out his now contaminated aspen, put it outside to dry with the rest, and replace with outdoor carpet(that plasticy green stuff) for a week or 2 and be able to put the old aspen back?
Is that carpet going to be okay for him as long as I provide lots of hiding spots?
And could these little white mites affect my cats? I know I read that they are/may be wood mites, but a mite is a mite, right?

The aspen mites won't harm the snake. You could kill them by freezing the aspen, or baking it at a very low temp- as low as your oven will go, for an hour or so. Maybe buy aspen from a different source next time? I have never had mites in Kaytee aspen. The carpet will be okay for a short term but it is hard to clean. You could also use paper towels.

just out of curiosity..

what brand of aspen did you use that had these mites in them...?

I would just like to know. :)

Thank you!

ummm i got it from petsmart and it looks like i got zoo-med. but i also had moss in there as well, and from what i saw they are wood mites. because i kept the tank too moist. we live in vegas so i was constantly spraying the moss and wood with water.

i took the aspen out and ill just buy new bedding. but i dont think it was the aspen because the ball python has reptibark in her cage, she she had moss as well. so idk the outdoor carpet is in there now, along with shredded paper towels for burrowing. and i took all the wood outside to dry out after bleaching and hot water soaking. his cage looks ghetto as hell though.

lets just hope i got em all :smash:

They could also be isopods, which are harmless. I intentionally put them in my planted gecko tanks, because they eat poop.

I had these mites break out in just one of my tanks. Not sure where they came from. I just froze the aspen and actually it was time to put my blizzard in the rack so I moved him. Haven't seen them anywhere else tho. I use a big 25lb bag of aspen we buy from Mark's work.

I had thought they were dust mites too

so, they are in all aspen beddings... ?

Hmmm, I wonder why I haven't seen any posts about these little creatures before.
Kind of makes me not want to use the Zoo Med Aspen bedding that I have..

Do they only come out when you mist the aspen a lot?? Or are they there no matter what?

Sorry for all of the questions, this just worries me, as I don't want bugs in my tank. :(

i have no idea how they get there or why, but i had zoo-med terrarium moss in there as well, and a half log. these mites eat the wood and thrive in moisture. they may have came from the moss or the bedding, but my ball python have a completly different bedding and they were in there too, sooo.. idk all i know is from what ive read they arnt harmful, the black and red mites are the ones you need to be really concerned with. but just to be safe i will no longer be buying zoo med products

what do you mean it was time to put him in the rack?

Fluery was a tiny hatchling that my husband saved from his work. He was like 4 grams when we brought him home. He was in a 5g viv on my husbands nightstand. He has gain weight beautifully. So he was outgrowing his lil bedside viv. So he got upgraded to my rack.

yeah I am slowly begging not to trust Zoo-med's products.. I really don't like the things I have read about there products.

Uhhh... I suppose i'll use the bedding, and see if there are any mites in mine. If there is, then i'll find a new brand. Hopefully, without these issues. :nope:

i would find a snake shop and see what other brands they have. i spoke to the manager at petsmart where i bought it from and he said he hasnt heard about anyone complaining they came from the zoo med. but i will still be on lockdown for 2 more weeks until im positive its might free and then i will be searching for another bedding

Kay. Thank goodness!

I'm still using paper towels right now.. Since Sirius is just a baby, and I want be able to see his first poop, So I know that everything is all fine and dandy with him.

And THEN I will freeze and use his aspen.. Oh the joys.:shrugs:
