help on subject??!!!

hey all, i have two corns and they are both on heat pads... but i want to put them on heat lights instead...is it ok if i do this? will they bask if there is heat? i just wanted to know so i could put them in bigger tanks so they would be out more. any help would be appreciated.

I think most people prefer to use UTHs because it is generally easy to regulate the temperature in the vivarium using those.

Is there a reason you don't want to use them any more?

Sorry I can't comment on heat lamps as have never used them myself.

UTH are better for the snake and also you don't have to worry about replacing the lamps and such. Stick to the UTH. Are your snakes in the same tank?

You can get ceramic heating "bulbs" for the heat lamps, they don't give off any light but lots of heat. They use less energy and don't bother the snake with constant light.

There are some people here who use heat lamps to heat the viv, I don't think it's bad as long as they can't burn themselves, have a heat gradient, and don't have constant light (look into light corn's can't see or ceramic bulbs). Also be wary of it getting too dry, moving the water dish to the warm side can help up the humidity if it becomes a problem.

Since he says his corns are on "heat pads" I would guess they aren't living together, unless he has more than one pad under the tank.

No, Corns aren't a basking snake, so switching to lamps won't encourage them to come out in the open any more, if that's what you're trying to achieve.

If you want to see them more, ironically, the best thing is to offer more ground cover in the shape of plastic foliage or hides. They will move about more freely if they think that they can't be seen.

Bear in mind that Corns generally aren't active during the day, as they are most active early morning/evenings/overnight.

Too true! Mine thinks that as long as he can't see me, I can't see him. So he hides his head behind or underneath something and there's still 5' of ass sticking out the other side :grin01:

rosehairboy,
Hope this has helped answer your question? Or was there another reaosn you wanted to switch to lamps?

no you guys guessed it i was just wondering if you could. i dont have them together... taht would be dumb since one is another foot longer than the other. so it was a curiosity question! thanks!

I forgot to mention, I use a ceramic heat bulb in the winter to bring up the ambient temp in Amel Boy's tank (he's in a drafty area, and it gets a little cooler than my other two tanks). There is no difference before or after I get the ceramic heat bulb up - he doesn't roam around at all. I even just added background and black cardboard sides to tank to make him feel more enclosed, and he still won't even stick his head out. I think some snakes are just like that.

Adding some background might help, I think it did for my friends corn. Just depends on the snake, I guess.
