Many, many reptiles, including corns, can carry salmonella.

I had these two, brother and sister, we made the mistake of selling the boy and the guy who bought him moved, one of the new neighbours suspected him to have snakes, the police came, took the litle ball ptyhon (only about 6 months old) and his two boa's constrictors, and killed them

Actually salmonella is something that reptiles use to digest their food, so their excrements can carry it. There are endless kinds of salmonella but the one that snakes carry isn't nearly as dangerus as the one that chicken or turtles have.

If I may suggest getting another tank? But make sure no one sees you, I wouldn't want the police to kill your babies. But this law of your reminds me a Hitler and the Jews. :crying: But that's awful! They came in and killed the snakes?! And even your he had?! *shivers* i would be so scared and hide my snakes where people couldn't see them. I would march down there or...up there, and give them a peace of my mind!

Why are they illegal? Did they do something wrong? Ferrets are Illegal in U.S. because in the past they killed our chickens. But if you get a listens saying you can handle and care for them. Then you don't have a problem. :D

I've read that over mating a female can cause bleeding, I'll try and find which books I read that in and link em for you, but I dunno.. I have over 300 snake books hehe O.O Are you sure its 2 ml? 2ml of blood can cover an area of 6 X 6 inches when smeared (thats human blood, not sure on the coagulant factors of snakes blood, I know the white cells are hugely different than mammals, so the coagulants could be too)

Are they still illegal? They aren't in Massachusetts (where everything else is illegal  God forbid the window tint on my car is 2% too dark :sobstory: ) I don't care for ferrets anyway...just like I'm not a cat person either. haha. But I'm a veterinary student...so I have to tolerate them.

That horrible that they would just come in and KILL the poor innocent snake! Wheres PETA when we need them????

Yeah they still are. The reason WHY they still are, is because a lot of people don't want then and don't care. So no one is stepping up saying we should have them. And it might be because if you go into another state and get a listens saying you can own one, then you're ok.

And yes I was thinking of that. Well maybe not thinking it just popped into my head. Because that event really took a toll on me. I cried in class. :crying: But I won't think of it anymore sorry. :uh-oh:

But if the female mating too many times could be it, then I really suggest getting another tank.

Jessica

well peta isnt necessarily on our side either because they are trien to pass laws to make it illegal to own certain reptiles perticularly corn snakes!! :eek1:

The bleeding sounds like post-mating bleeding, especially if the blood is accompanied by a yellowish sludge (semen). I've had a few of my females do it before, and one does it with just about every mating (even the first), regardless of the male. I guess her cloacal cavity is just thin-skinned.

Here's pics of her and the blood:

Surely you have an Ikea (or similar) store in Iceland, if so go and get a good quality storage tub similar to Sterilites and you can use that to temporarily house one of the snakes. I typically use 40qt or larger if you can find it. Heck, even a fish tank would suffice with a decent lid made of wood and wire. Or you could try to divide that roomy viv they're in currently to make two living quarters out of it. There are always ways to separate snakes, it just takes initiative.

Keeping them together really isn't advisable, regardless of age for this very reason. If you have a male and female together, you're going to get eggs, which means you're going to have hatchlings you need to do something with eventually. And on an island where reptiles are currently illegal, selling them could be problematic on several levels.

While the male looks ok, the female looks a tad underweight. So if indeed they have been mating, I would feed her more often to try to get her weight up a little.

And seriously, reptiles illegal on an island where it gets cold and snowy a good chunk of the year? By that same token they should ban humans from the island, as they're more invasive and environmentally threatening as any reptile ever thought about being. ;)

:-offtopic

And because I'm compelled to...

Oh really? Nevermind the fact that a ferret species is indeed native to the US. And pet ferrets are not illegal in ALL of the US, only in certain states and municipalities. I've got a pet ferret, I did manage to research on the legalities in my neck of the woods before I bought him.

Get real, get a life, and find a new forum to attempt to impress people. Yeah I know, it's a poor helpless newbie you have to try to show off for...but c'mon.

Do a search for "blood mating", it comes up with quite a few things. Quite easy if'n you ask me.

Actually thats a breeding pic. Go back and read what she posted.

Not trying to jump on you here but take a little time to absorb others comments. I appreciate the fact you are trying to help but allot of the advice you are offering is incorrect. I am trying to be polite.

:-offtopic Yeah Tac... uber PMS. Giving valuable info on blood smearing isn't showing off.. its being itelligent and helpful.. not nasty and rude like you. You REALLY need to take some finishing school *rolls eyes* And I'M not the one being childish and telling every other female on the forum off any chance I get.. I'm not the one that needs a life here. /rant off

:-offtopic Sorry for the cranky post folks, she's been trying to chase me off the boards for over a year and I'm not letting her and her high horse get in the way of trying to help others and keeping my snakes healthy... not gunna happen. Snakes > Tacs ENORMOUS ego problems.

Monty? as in Python? ... oh, groan ... :grin01:

Actually, handsome babies all. I understand why you're proud of them.

Taceas, thanks for posting that bloody breeding pic. If I walked in on that in a couple of years (when my babies are breedable), I probably would have lost my mind! :eek1: ... but otherwise, this girl has no problems with clutching?
