Hi! I'm a 13 year old girl living in Virginia. I'm about to get my second snake, but it's the first one that I'll actually be responsible for (my ball python lives in Cali with my dad). I'm getting a Black Motley Cornsnake within the next week or two, and I'm SO excited! If anybody has ANY advice for caring for him/her, it would be extremely appreciated!!!

You have come to the right place! And it is so wonderful you came here before you got your cornsnake! One important thing you will learn is that cornsnakes need belly heat to digest their food so make sure to get them an under tank heater *UTH* or heat tape, depending on how you will be housing your new baby. They do not need an overhead lamp. You didn't mention where you were getting it from, but most pet stores will tell you that you do. And don't get the stick on type thermometers. They don't give accurate temps. You will need to get either a thermostat or a dimmer switch (light you use on table lamps) to control the heat on your UTH/Heat tape. And it is best to use a thermometer with a probe on it. It goes under the Aspen, under the hide on the heat side. We use the Acurite type which is in the home and garden section of stores. It tells you the humidity, indoor temp of the tank and "outdoor" temp...which is where the probe is. They are great to use. If you ever get another one..and believe me cornsnakes are addicting...do not house them together. Feeding frozen mice is best, though not everyone does it, because it decreases the risk of parasites and bites to the snake. Be sure when you first bring your new baby home you let him get acclimated to his new home for a few days before handling him/her. And after he eats, do not hold him for at least 3 days until he passes his food. It is also good to keep records of their feeding, defecations, sheds, etc. in either a notebook, card file or you can go to iherp.com and keep your records there. It is great online tool to use.
Oh, and please post pics when you get him/her! We love pics here! And ask any questions, someone on here will know the answer!
Welcome!!!
