Hi, me, myself and I

Ophiuchus

New member
So, my user-name. Ophiuchus is my first corn snake's name. I call him Gus for short.

I have a lot of questions that I will probably post most of in the breeding/egg and health boards.

I don't have many pictures of Gus, none so great. I need to take more and upload from camera.

My name is Tyla, I am in the portland oregon area. I am disabled, which sucks, but I use my time to care and pamper to my animals and fiance'.

One of my friends a while back had a corn snake. I fell in love. Pablo. He would sit around me in my shirt for hours. I forgot he was there a couple times. Lol. I decided I wanted one. When the opportunity came I took it.

Right now we have two corns. Gus and Voltaire. We just got Gus about 2-3 months ago.

Gus is very easy going. He loves to be out of his tank, but would rather explore the room than cuddle with you. He is a "second-hand" snake. Found his ad on ebay classifieds. He was very well taken care of. Very friendly. He is around 4 years. A little over 5 feet long. He is thin, but not under-weight. Has that bread loaf look that I was told to look for.

Voltaire... Just got her a few days ago. There was an ad on craigslist for a free corn with supplies. I just had this feeling. We went and got her in a second. I am not judging the people that had her. I understand more than anyone that stuff happens in life. They had a lot going on which prevented proper care. I praise they did the right thing by finding her a better home than letting her suffer longer.

Her cage stunk to high heaven. Poops enough for 5-6 feedings. Water bowl also had feces in it. No hide at all. Not even enough substrate to cover the bottom of the tank.

Got her home, luckily I had a per-sanitized cage that I had cleaned a while back. I set up the new tank. Her energy went immediately from stressed, to relaxed and curious because she was in a clean tank.

The people said she was male, but I am not so sure. I just have a hunch, need to get her sexed. They claimed her 3 years. She is a little over 3 feet long, but she is thick! almost twice as thick as Gus. She is a little overweight, but she would still be thick after loosing a couple grams.

She is such a sweet-heart. I handled her and she is very calm and decisive. She likes to be held, settles in against the warmth of skin. Also likes to explore, but is perfectly fine with a short extrusion.

I don't have a picture of her yet.

I am going to go to the local reptile shop and get advice/training from them. I need to learn more about them, as I am becoming addicted to these monsters. Lol.

Though a newbie, I am confidant in how I am caring for them.

I think I want to become a reptile hobbyist. I have much to learn to become one. I am excited about it though. There is always more stuff to learn and research about.

Anyway I am jabbering now, so I'll shut my pie hole before I dig myself a dirt hole. Lol.

Sounds like a good start to the hobby. Welcome to the site.
I would say keep strict protocols on quarantine between your new snake and Gus for 6 months. Wash your hands thoroughly between handling them, use separate feeding bins, preferably keep them in different rooms if you can.

For getting the new girl to slim down a bit, I'd recommend feeding her every 2 weeks and keep handling her regularly. It'll take time, but gradually she should get slimmer and snake-shaped

Well hello and welcome to the corn snake forum!! I think it is wonderful that you have gus and voltaire in your care now. Iam also disabled myself and my reptiles and all my animals give me joy congrats on your new two corns. :)

Thank you Holly. :) Yea, if I didn't have animals I would probably play video games all day. Wait... I do that anyway. >.> lol

Hello! and Welcome!

This is the best forum I have found online!
and the amount of information on here is invaluable. :)
I'm sure you'll love it here!

Hello and welcome! Think you are already realizing this, but watch out, corns and reptiles in general are addictive! And this forum is full of dangerous enablers and too many pretty pictures! Had one corn snake for almost a month when I joined this site and now look at my collection. Some of the ones in my sig are actually my husband's, though I'm the one who enabled him into his first two snakes. And all the subsequent ones ...

Thank you Justine!

lmfao, Tavia! You say that like 1) it is a bad thing and 2) you can do something about it once you get your first snake.

^.^

Welcome!!! I love the Portland area :) I lived there for a few years, and my aunt lives in Forest Grove! (I am tossing around the idea of moving back) I can't wait to see pics of your snakies :)
