Hello. I don't have a snake myself, but I've wanted to ever since there was a reticulated python at a science park for a short period of time. I was about 5 at the time and the only thing that's been keeping me from getting one is my "mommy dearest's" petrifying phobia of snakes. I've come to the conclusions that my mother doesn't know best, I'm a grown woman, when I do get the corn snake I want it won't leave my room(other than veterinary check-ups and whatnot), and I deserve to have a companion of my own.

I would like to get a female blizzard and every possible bit of information before embarking on the endeavor of companionship with such a remarkably beautiful creature. Any tips that anyone has for what heating I should get, hides, substrate, escape-proofing, and vivarium style as well as feeding, cleaning, and possible catching(in case of escape) will be greatly appreciated.

But I will say you might be picky on that corn you want now but once you see the one for you, its a done deal. I wanted a snow or a coral, but when I got butter I was done he was the most amazing looking corn to me. And I would never be able to part with him now, even if he is a pain in my but sometimes XD.

I have to agree with EatMice, you'll be surprised who you suddenly fall in love with! Heck we didn't even want a corn, but when we found Igneous it was a done deal.

Funny a big ole Retic at an exhibit was what kindled my interest in snakes.

I've only been on here a short while, but I've been trolling every thread written for the past month or so and it seems to me the general consensus is...

Bedding: Aspen. Hands down the most popular

Heating: Undertank heating pad with a thermostat seems to be considered the best setup for your buddy. Get a pad about 1/3rd the size of your tank.

Hides: Freaking anything! Get something just big enough for your snake to crawl into. Half Logs are awesome.

Tanks... Well I've got the Zilla 20 gallon long with snapping screen lid. Very secure for my fully grown guy but I've read a few babies have escaped through the tiny gaps in the front corners.

Thank you. I do know that I at least want to get a captive bred snake so the wild ones can keep the wild rodent population in check. No need to damage the ecosystem any further. I do ultimately have to admit that I may be getting a little too picky when it comes to the morph, and I really don't know which one will be for me, but I do know the best color for my personality will be a very striking one. I have a soft spot for colors that seem to pop.

I would like to get the vivarium set up before I start looking for my scaly companion, and I have a spot in mind. I also kind of want to spoil her/him to the bone with a pretty home. My friend has a ball python(mature) and an albino corn(baby) and I've noticed that their viv's aren't that appealing to look at. They don't seem to mind at all, but I'm not sure a paper towel tube is a very pretty hide.

I also have to ask if black light is like regular light for corns? I have a habit of being up at all hours of the night, and I can see fine with my black light, but I don't want to confuse or hurt my slithering buddy.

I wouldn't get a black light. They are very, very bad for fish so I imagine they are bad for snakes too.
