High White Cali project!

Kokopelli

Resident Boa Fanatic
I was kind of skeptic that I'll manage to establish a pair of these here... with the way imports are so dissorganized and without much of a direction.

I found this gal eventually:

AND, I saw this fella at a really good price. It was supposed to be a female, but for the price I reckoned it'll be ok even if it's another female. I lucked out and it's a male:

I can't wait to see what they will produce!!

Nice Oren, if I had to pick a cal king morph to work with and not mind them chomping on me High white ones would be it. I have heard (don't know how valid it is) that their metabolism is faster than a corn's (leading to the hand chomps) and they can be fed a little more frequently and with slightly smaller prey items. Good luck, looking forward to seeing this project's results :)

Their metabolism is a little bit higher than a corn snakes. But I still feed them the same day that I feed my corn snakes. A lot of new owners that the high metabolism to the extreme and end up with hugely overweight kingsnakes.

Sometimes I will feed two weanlings instead of one adult mouse if they are really hungry. But that is rare. Usually after the males have gone on breeding season hunger strikes. Afterwards they seem very very hungry.

First off, these two are simply puppy tame... no chomping, no nothing.
This actually applies to many California Kings I worked with- and I worked with quite a few.

Florida... WELL... those indeed are hungry buggers... they greet me with an open mouth for sure... but the moment they realize I'm not food, they back off decently enough and become rather tame.

It is quite possible that Getula kings are simply constantly stimulated... they smell food(aka, your other pet reptiles) ALL the time... so that might serve to explain the rather aggressive feeding response.

I'm not sure I buy into the faster metabolic rate theory... I find them to be similar to Corns... with the exception of not being able to digest as large prey items as a Corn of the same size can.

The major difference is the strength of the feeding response... you get used to it.

This applies only to Lampropeltis Getula though... there are other, quite docile, even to the point of food-shy kingsnakes.

My kingsnakes are all very good. They have a typical kingsnake feeding response. They get excited over their food and stay in feeding mode longer than my corn snakes do. But they are very easy to handle otherwise.

I've only had one kingsnake that would bite every chance he got. He would even strike at your through the glass of his viv when you walked by. But after 8 months of handling him anyway, he finally calmed down and is just as easy to handle as my other snakes.

The only problem I've witness with my kingsnakes are with the babies. I've done two breeding loans with two different females. The first litter of babies were reluctant to eat f/t. The second litter of babies flat out refused any attempt of f/t. However last resort before tube feeding was to offer live and they took the live no problem. Many switched to f/t their second feeding. However some took much longer to switch and still refuse the f/t occasionally.
But that is with my litters. Other snakes may produce litters that eat f/t perfectly each and every time. I just haven't been so lucky yet.
