hog island boa bite

Hi

first sorry for posting about a boa on a corn snake forum but this is just the best forum i know of.
I recently saw a hog island boa and now i really want one, but 1 piece of information i don't seem to be able to find. If they bite, how bad does it hurt?
I know there are several people on this forum that have boa's so i'm hoping one of them was bitten. (Nothing personal :p)

I've been tagged by both my (then) 5 foot BCI (she's around 6 feet now) and my 4 1/2 foot BCO. The bite from the BCI didn't really hurt at all, and she actually bit me twice...once was a grab and let go and then the second she grabbed on and coiled around my arm and hung on for about 30 seconds. Neither was painful, although there was a ton of blood. The bite from my BCO was different, as they're known to be a bit more cranky and they hit with more force. The teeth themselves didn't really hurt, but my hand was bruised because of the force with which she hit me. I can find pictures if you'd like to see the result of either bite.

Shenzi, I don't think the OP needed that response. Clearly s/he knows that snakes can and will bite (the question was not 'Do hoggies bite?'), they were simply asking if it is a painful one for when it does happen. Why do you insist on giving rude answers? You were a new around here at one point and people answered all of your questions nicely, as far as I recall, so why not return the favor?

I have never been bit by my new Hogg but it has bit the previous owner, said it scared the crap out of him (like all snake bites) but it didn't hurt that bad, although there was quite a bit of blood. Don't let that deter you though!! The Hogg was going into shed and he didn't notice so it's not like she bit for no reason. They said a Hogg is about the easiest boa for a beginner and for a lot of people, it is their favorite 'morph' :) I can't wait to get bit by this and my corn snake! I wanna see what all of the fuss is about :)

Thank you for the answers haarstad and hallie.

ShenziSixaxis... I KNOW SNAKES BITE!!!! as said by hallie i didn't ask if they bite i asked what the damage will be when they bite. I don't care if i get bit i just want to know what to expect from a bite. If the answer of hallie was that it hurts like hell, so be it i would still get a hog island boa.

Yep, you're right Eric. Hogs are said to be one of the best boas for boa beginners. BCI are generally very reliable feeders (although my Caulker Cay won't eat f/t on his own right now, so he gets assist fed as I won't feed him live), are very personable, have pretty basic husbandry requirements, and are rarely grumpy. Add to that the fact that the island localities stay small and you have a perfect pet!

Atmox, good luck on finding a the perfect one! I can't wait to see pictures when you do get one (and if you ever have any boa questions, feel free to PM me, I'm always happy to help).

Eric, I get bit so often now that I don't even flinch when it happens. I have a few corns that are constantly cranky and a king that bites no matter what when you get him out. It's definitely the waiting to get bit that is the scary part. I remember when I was terrified to get bit by a yearling corn I used to have (back in the day when I only had 3 corns and was only in this whole reptile thing for about a year)...I used to use a sock over my hand to get her out! Now I get tagged a few times a week by one big adult corn or another and don't even notice half the time.

haha, i just want my snakes to stop teasing me and just bite me already!! lol

I know the feeling, i really want to get bit too by my corn so i want pull away and accidentally hurt him when the bite starts to hurt when he's older

It's like attack of the killer Velcro. I've only had one bite actually hurt and that was from Spencer, a 575g adult male corn. The only reason it was painful was the bite location. He got me right over a knuckle where the skin is thin and sensitive.

Yeah, i could see how that one hurt. If my corn ever get's in striking position, i'll just stick my hand in there anyway lol :)

That's what I do with my 'aggressive' adults...Step 1. Open tub. Step 2. Dodge first strike. Step 3. Offer forearm. Step 4. Get tagged. Step 5. Pick up snake who is now generally calm and acting like nothing happened. It's a good system and works quite well. The snake is 'happy' that it got to bite and I'm not hurt and still get to interact with a now calm snakie. Corn bites sure do get itchy though...

I laughed when i read step 3 lol but that's probly the best place to get bit. lots of skin and muscle and the bone is no where to be bit lol

The way you worded your question is where my answer came from.

Personally, a bite hurts depending on where it is and how sensitive you are. I can only deal with multi-bites from the youngest of corns before I start hurting on my hands. My dad, on the other hand, gets bumps that bleed on his hands, forearms, and head and won't notice them unless we point them out. All depends. A good way to find out how sensitive you are is to go to a pet store and ask to see a nasty snake or big gecko (leos and fat tails have no teeth, and I don't THINK tokays do; I've also found that it's the older ones that BITE rather than run away and make noise) ; if they aren't sure what's nasty, ask to see kings and milks, or any rat snakes if they have them, but all are hit or miss.

How bad does it hurt? Well, you won't need stitches. And really, if it does hurt it will hurt for a few days at most. That's really nothing compared to years of keeping an awesome animal.

I got some stats from the Ministry of Environment and they said there have only been three people in the province to ever have been sent to the hospital by their boas. All three were for to bites to the eye (really, the only place to get bit that requires a hospital visit). That's all the info I have, but I'll add hogs are cuuuuuuute and I love mine to bits! Moss hasn't been pissy since he was a baby.

Very true, a bite to the eye is really the only thing that would need a hospital, and you'd be going to the hospital whether it was a hogg or a corn

Ouch! To the eye, were they trying to kiss those boas? lol
Anyway as i said before I'm not scared of getting bit and as you said it's nothing compared to having these wonderful critters as pet.
