How to heat New Rack??

Bug22baby

Snakes and more Snakes
Well I just got my new rack done, and it was designed to be light so that it can be moved since I have plans to move 2-3 times at least in the next 3 years. Now all I have left is to heat the thing. I was gonna do belly heat but I don't think I can do that well because it would make the shelves too tightfor the bins I think. So I have saw many people heat the backs of there bins. I was wondering if I were to put strips of heat tape from top to bottom on the left side of the rack (pictures below) if it would heat sufficiently for cornsnakes. Also what temp. would I keep the heat tape on the side since it wont be in direct contact with the bins??? If anyone has any experience with this please share. I need to order heat tape tonight and wanna make sure I do this right. Thanks Much Amanda

Amanda...

Do a search right in this section of the forum for flex watt.

There are several excellent rack and heating threads, some with great pics, that will guide you thru :)

Searched

Ok so I did a search under a few different phrases. I did get tons of things on flexwatt. But none of them go into how they put it on the backs or sides of the racks, just state that they did. I know how to install and hook it all up. my main Question is like if you were to put flexwatt on the side would it heat the box's sufficient enough, and what recommended size and temps should I get?? Thanks Amanda

Heating

AHHHH Now I see I just didnt look far enough into the many pages of posts. Ok so now I have a good idea of how to do it. Maybe Ill attempt to put the heat tape across the back end. Need Peg board yet, thats at my cabin picking up this weekend. Just one last question. Im doing one row of 9 bins from floor to cieling. All are 35qt Sterlite tubs. Im housing Adult corns and one ball Python in the Rack. I plan to do 2 seperate dimmer switches to temp the top vs the bottoem since the temps will be different naturally. ball python will have a extra strip for him. But do you recommend a certain size flexwatt? I guess I can run it down the center like CAV has posted in his rack thread. I didnt find what size you were using in there? I was thinking 4 inch or should I go bigger? Thanks Much You Both have been a great help!!

Amanda...

I'm partial to the 11" Flex Watt...but that's just me (Grin). I have 3 racks all configured differently...so I ran a single or multiple strips down the backs.

I've seen a lot of folks use 3 or 4" in the same way...you might want to dig thru those posts a bit more, gather all the opinions..then decide (smile).

For the size of tubs you are using I'd go with the 11 inch. To determine the temp put a thermometer in the back of one of the tubs and adjust your thermostat (or whatever you are using to control the heat) as needed.

I have 4 inch tape in my rack. I ran it down the center of the back. ( in the winter my snakes curl up against the back of my bin. some in the hide, others on the hide.) never had a problem with them. i don't know bp's temp range. so you might want 11 inch for it. just run that one on its own dimmer/rheostat which ever you decide to use.

i made my rack about last year. i just made a bigger one recently.
i would also suggest you takes Gronk advice. good advice IMO
