Huge disparity in Breeders

I agree. I've spent 45 minuites sending a beautiful reply with new pictures, and everything only to get the following response. "Aight". If I took new pictures for everyone that wanted them, I'd be doing nothing but taking pictures.

That's the number one reason a majority of my responses to long emails is "Please give me a call". That way I can talk and work at the same time. And I can answer all the customers questions at once.

I check the BOI for others if I'm considering buying somewhere else.

Unfortunately, a person needs to check the BOI whenever they buy (or sell!) a snake, no matter who is selling it, even me! Do not assume that just because a person is a member here they are ethical or honest. Most are, but there are a few that are not.

I just have a couple things to say:

1) I've dealt with/bought snakes from a few people here. And a few others found on Fauna Classified. Without exception, I've had an excellent experience. Maybe the websites weren't 100% up to date, but honestly, my own website (I do commission artwork) isn't 100% up to date. It's really not top priority, especially when animal care is in the mix.

2) You mention emailing people and receiving no replies. Did you send follow-up emails? Did you consider that they may not have even received your email? My spam filter sometimes gets over-enthusiastic.

3) Definitely check BOI. Only my first snake purchase was made without BOI (and that was before I knew about it...but I got very lucky and stumbled onto SMR for my first purchase)

These are all valid points.
When paying, I prefer to pay by paypal, because it offers me a better grade of protection then if sending a USPS money order. Even then, putting it on a credit card gives me even greater protection. Some sellers may ask you mark the payment in PP as a "gift" instead of for "purchase of goods". If the deal goes bad, paypal will not refund your payment if it is marked as a "gift".
So when I cannot find any info about a seller on the BOI, then I pay using my credit card (not debit) through paypal.

The Spam Filter.
Pick your subject line wisely.
Subjects like "Alert!" and other common spammy subject lines may go directly to the junk folder. Along with "Your website needs updating". Most of us know what its like to receive 300 junk emails a day. It's easy to delete a real email. Make sure the subject line is specificly about what interests you.

Include a link to the ad if possible.

Emails that come with the subject line "snake question"
and then go on to say any of the following
Hi i saw that snake is it a male or a female did you know its a hybrid i was wondering if youd take 30 dollars for it i have an xbox to trade for it what is it feeding on thanks

Most of that was already covered in the ad, obviously you cannot read so why bother replying. Also, which snake? The seller may have more than one for sale across numerous sites. It might already be sold.

I am not going to say how I do things, the OP already stated we should not take it personally.

I've read through this whole thread. I didn't have time yesterday, but 12 pages in one day, wow, a nerve was hit! I now have a better appreciation of what a breeder goes through and a sense of their priorities. I may not have walked in your shoes, or spent a day doing your work, but I think I have a clue what it would be like now. A lot of hard work.

As a customer in general I'd like to make a few observations I've had over the last couple of years. I have another hobby, that includes mostly sideline businesses similar to yours. Not reptiles but live, that must be cared for daily, worry over heat and cold in shipping, out growing the space, etc.

I can give examples if you want them. I'll put them as suggestions rather than complaints. These mostly come from nonreptile shopping attempts, some successful some not. None of them are from people here. So here it goes:

Make it easy for me to give you my money! If you have an ad, please give an e-mail address and maybe a phone number. Don't have one of those stupid forms you fill in on your website to contact you. List an address to reach you at. Your name. It isn't Cheers, not everyone knows your name! Say all the ways you can take payments and try to be as flexible as possible. Have preferences, but have alternatives other than PayPal (please, please, please).

If you have changed focus and are not selling what you were known for, say so on the home page! If you sold your breeding stock to someone else, point shoppers there.

If you leave your website up, even though you've gone out of business, say so on the home page. "We have gone out of business, but are leaving the website up so past customers can research pedigrees, crossings, sources etc. Also we feel the information here is of value and it is our gift to the community. Thank you for your past patronige."

If you aren't keeping your website up to date, say so; "We are still in business, just too busy to keep available listings up to date, please feel free to contact us at xxxxxxx with your wants and we will let you know if we have it or when we expect to have it."

If it takes you awhile to respond to e-mails, say so! "Depending on the time of year it may take us up to a week to respond to your enquiry. If it has been longer than that, please send a follow-up in case your first e-mail got caught in a spam filter, some how overlooked or forgotten in the rush."

Finally, please don't make me open an account on your website to buy something from you. I don't want to join your "club", I want to give you money to get something in return. (I think this is one mainly for the non-hobbiest seller).

I could go on and on, but you get the idea. I l know I'm a new guy here and not part of the "in" crowd. None of you know me and I hope I didn't come across as critical - that's not how I meant it. I wanted to vent a little bit and this seemed like a good thread to do it in. If any of it is useful to you, great! If not, well thanks for reading.

Thank you all for listening.

Pugs
p.s. I spent so long on this, the system logged me out! Thank the gods for cut and paste.

I just wanted to put in my 2 cents. I come into this thread as a CUSTOMER, and aspiring to join the rank of "breeder" in the next year or 2. As you can see I got quite a little collection brewing and I expect to be fully in-over-my-head when the 2014 breeding season rolls in.

Let me say, as a customer who's made FAR FAR FAR more Inquiries than actual purchases, and pulled the famously annoying "Please hold it for me" on at LEAST 2 breeders on this website, with mixed responses of course, and I completely understand the "Not without payment", and am EXTREMELY grateful for the "sure no problem" because I know that's a massive leap of faith!

Being as annoying as I'm sure I've been, I have had such fantastic experiences with Reptile Breeders in general! Ask an educated question, and you will receive an educated response. But you cannot expect ANYONE who works with animals, to rank customer service as a top priority. The way a Breeder of any animal, reptile, dog, cat, whatever... who cares about their animals is going to think... is "If you want one of my babies.. BABIES... you need to make the effort. Because I am trusting YOU to care for this animal"

I have always felt honored to be permitted to purchase an animal from someone who took the time and tedious care to create it.

P.S. you think Reptile Breeders are rude? TRY getting a puppy from a High-End Top Winning AKC Multi Champion Producing DOG BREEDER. Gooood Luck talking to THEM about "Customer Service" HA! (Trust me, My mother is one, and she gives her buyers hell and then some) At least Reptile breeders don't make you fill out Multi-Page Applications and do Home-Checks and Reference Calls and make you sign proper care contracts! Just putting things into perspective

Can I agree more? No, no I cannot.

This was an entertaining read. :3 Not gonna lie. :3

I'm gonna have my hands full taking care of one snake when/if I get one, I really respect you guys being able to care for hundreds at a time. I don't even know where you guys have the SPACE for all those snakes! XD I know if I get into breeding I'd put a lot of care into who I sell to. They're living creatures in my care and I know I'd be really over protective of them. :p I'd probably keep more than I sell lol. XD End up on Hoarders. XD
