I have a serious problem...

corn snakey

Okay, I may be very paranoid, but im really concerned for my snakes health.

on the warm side of my 20gallon tank im trying to get the temperature to stay 80-85, but everything I have no has failed. Ive put 3 towels intop of the heater, along with cardboard. and the temperature is almost hitting 100F. No matter what I have tried nothing is working and its making me very angry and upset because I don't want to lose my corn....

Im trying really hard to get a thermostat, but of course they dont sell them locally so I have to online and that will take awhile to come in.

I need help please. I dont understand why this is even happening. its barely even hot on the surface of my cardboard but my thermometer says that below the substrate is (at the moment) 97.8F

I ment to say everything I have tried has failed.

UTHs can reach 130F easily, with no thermostat. Just unplug yours and don't feed your snake until the one you ordered arrives. It must certainly be warm enough in Texas, in your house, for the snake to survive without heat for a few days.

You can go to WalMart and get a lamp dimmer in the hardware/lighting section for ~9 bucks. It will let you keep the UTH at a lower temp.

I agree. It would be much safer to leave the snake without heat for a few days than over heat it and potentially cause serious risk of injury or death. Best of luck with your new snakie :)

I live in San Antonio and from about March to November I don't use any heat on my snakes. We keep our house at 80 during the day and maybe 78 at night. My snake has not had any problems and is 4 years old.

Hoho19 is probably the guy to listen to, he lives in the same neck of the woods as you....(nanci and Elle are right as well).... Heating is only needed when you live in a cold area like me and Elle...LOL

Another option that I did while waiting for mine was simply place four or five books underneath each end of the tank (and probably in the middle of your 20gal.) leaving the UTH on the surface of the shelf/desk. The distance the heat had to travel up to the tank, kept the surface from overheating.

I used a similar method when I had to use a temporary tank, I used cut section of 2' x 4' and rested the tank on that. It worked well because they were uniform width and height.

Just unplug it to be safe until the thermostat comes in the mail. I got mine from www.bigalsonline.com and it came within 5 days. It was the best price too. Zoo Med 500R for $27 including shipping.
