I need a good DIY for under 20...

I have a couple of stands at my house and stuff...
But I want a good enclosure that I can use for my snake...
I have this black stand, that my 10gallon will fit on...
But I would like to have a good enclosure without having the 10 gallon in there, but he is a watersnake... I would love some ideas...
THANK YOU!

Its going to be hard to do for under $20. Your best bet might be looking for something on craigslist or similar. But making an enclosure in that price range is going to be difficult.

Well i have a stand I can put on it's side...
I just want to know if everything else will be cheap...
Glass sliding door, Sealant, and wood chip fillings at the bottom...

The glass alone will probably cost more than $20. Tubes of sealant run a couple bucks a pop. Aspen bedding is often $5 or more for a small bag.

i build my beardies cages. theyre 4x2x2 and have a screen top. and sliding glass. the glass is usually like 30 bucks for 2 panes for sliding glass. then i had to order the track for the glass because most places dont carry it. i chose glass over acrylic so that it doesnt get scratched from their nails. i would suggest plexi/acrylic doors for snakes. much lighter, and dont dig into the track like the glass corners do. and you can just buy a sheet and cut it yourself. if you can find it its not cheap but save up your money and look for sheets of xpvc. best stuff to make cages out of. its like what boaphile uses. i use melamime for cages also. its the white wood like what closet shelves have a lot of times. its not that cheap but its really good for cages cause the wood is protected and doesnt need to be sealed. except in the seams of the cages.

for 20 bucks your not gonna be able to make much. and deffinately not glass doors. plexi isnt cheap either. i say save up your money and keep researching and drawing up designs. youll then have the money and youll have a better idea of what you want to build. also do you have the tools to build a cage. youll need a drill, bits, screw bit, saw/s, and all sorts of measuring stuff and clamps. and a hammer of course.

i dont have any water snake experience in captivity. so i have no idea what they need. but look for some bigger old fish tanks in your paper or craigslist. i just saw a 55 gallon with a stand and hood for like 50 bucks in the paper when i was searchin jobs the other day. i thought about getting it and cleaning it up maybe using it. but i hate tanks.

yeah. i lived here for maybe less than a month now. so im new. we have a couple members right around here. min is in east canton i think.

Oh cool. Do you ever find any snakes just outside around your place?
I've gone to 4 lakes to look for snakes and found nothing...
Sippolake,Berlin,Atwood and some lake down in Colombus...
I can't find a snake if my life depended on it :|.

everytime i cut grass i find a few northern brown snakes. there just lil guys. i seen a garter or 2 but nothing but them yet. i havent really looked too much yet either. but we had a overgrown field that was part of our yard. i just cleared it out to make us have more yard so that was prime snake habitat. tons of slugs and frogs. and a lot of mice but havent seen any snakes for them yet. maybe their babies though.

well northern browns and the small garters wouldnt be that great of a snake to own. their diet is not a common rodent diet, so it would be a ton of work to keep them captively. im not sure i wanna do it, i dont know ohios laws about taking animals and keeping them captively.

Venomous = License
More than 4 = License
Otherwise you can have any snake, other than endangered species.

^that's more than four of each species, you could have say 4 garters and 4 brown snakes.

I've kept both garters and brown snakes and they've both been good pets for me. If you want a pet that you can hold and interact with, then no, because they musk and bite, but if you want one that you can look at and take good of, then they are good. It is hard to get food for them, but I kept a garter snake for about 6 years when I was younger on a diet of just worms bought at a pet store, and some feeder fish.

I've seen that you talk about keeping a water snake in some of your other posts, and I would highly vote against that. They are terribly hard to keep (at least for me and I've kept most native Ohio species). They require land AND water and lots of it. They grow pretty big and need lots of food that is hard to get. Their main diet is frogs, toads and fish. Which aren't in that great of a supply around here.

If you want to talk about Native Ohio species, send me a PM though, I'd be glad to talk about them, I've got some pretty nice pictures of most of them!

I forgot to add about the water snake. He is doing fine now, I think I can get enough food for him when he gets bigger, the pet store near me is 10Cents per goldfish like feeders. So I think he's fine, I'm not having a hard time keeping him.

I'm pretty sure you can have all of those without having to have a license. Mostly the license is for people who intend to breed them or sell them, stuff like that. It also keeps people from taking TONS out of the wild.

That's great that your water snake is doing well! He might be having shedding problems because there is too much water in there actually. Idk how much land he has, but you might want to give him a nice dry place to let his skin fall off.

I know of some great herping places in Ohio, if you want you can IM me on AIM at bluejackets6145

Also check out the website I put together, the link is in my sig, under NOBA. Those are all the animals my girlfriend and I found just this summer in the woods around here.
