I need some advice & help! Hognose related

GUYS! I found a.. frog? It looks like either a bull toad or a southern toad. It's fairly dark, round, has two ridges that start behind the eyes, is a dark reddish/black pattern.. Pictures are on the way. I made him a little house so I can verify if he's toxic or not to scent for my hognose. He's fairly warty, too.

wooohoooo!

a toad! I hope he's not poisonous! cause that Guy should help you out!!!

can't wait for photos!

Sorry if these are huge!

Dawee ! what a cute little pudge!

I'm gunna try and fond out what that toad is... Google here we come!
what state do you live in? :)

They make pretty cool pets, BTW. You can put him in any terrarium, with earth or orchid moss for substrate. He will want to burrow in. He will need a shallow water bowl he can get into, and mist him once or twice a week. To feed him, buy crickets and super worms. and you can feed him in a feeding bin just like a snake, but give him a little room to move around. Put him in the bin with the food and let him eat till he's full. Twice a week should be fine.

it kinda looks like a marine or Cane toad (didn't you guys had those in Florida) or a Fowler's toad
. theirs only about 5 types of toads found where you live, and out of all of them he looks like a young Cane toad to me..

but I'm no exspert! lol just trying to help!

Thanks Nanci! I think so too. It does say "However, the material they secrete from the parotoid glands (located at the back of the head, behind the ears) may be irritating to human mucous membranes, but not toxic." That should be safe for the little hognose, right? I'm sure they have a degree of tolerance for that sort of thing via evolution/etc?

And no chance it's a Giant Toad, right? I see the ridges of the southern toad, but I really want to be sure, because it says giant's are apparently very toxic. :S But.. I picked it up and my hands don't hurt (lol) so...

i was thinking southern toad!!!

it the photos I seen they were all yellow in colour!
damn! :( good call nanci!

So... Should I be good to scent with him then? And... lol... how should i do it? Should I just kinda roll the pinkie on his back/body?

You aren't going to die from handling a toad- just wash your hands when you're done. I've even had several marine/cane toads for pets- they also make great pets, just don't put them in your mouth, and wash your hands before eating, drinking or smoking, and don't allow pets to mouth or touch them.

I would just rub the pink on the toad's back.

I wasn't too worried about that! Lol. I just wanted to make sure what the website was saying (that southern toads have a mild irritant) wasn't going to affect the hognose in any way.

I'm not sure if I'll keep him (though it would be very convenient to have him around if the hognose takes this scented pinkie) just because my boyfriend is about ready to pull his hair out with the whole "too many pets" thing.. but maybe I can convince him otherwise. 0 : )

I'm gonna scent and put the pinkie & hoggie in a deli cup and put it in a dark place so hoooopefully he justs eats up :3 I hope the scent is irresistible for him! heheh

I think I might!

When I picked him up, he made the most... oh god.. the most adorable noise! The cuuuutest squeaking I've ever heard in my life! SOOOO CUUUUTE!! I have never handled frogs/toads before other than just as a child, and.. omg. CUUUUTE!

Also, thank you Justine, Nanci, everyone! I really appreciate your fast and wonderful help! I just got the pinkie in there with the little hog, put them in a paper bag and hid 'em in my closet for the night. Maybe he'll eat, maybe not - I wonder if my next step, should this fail, is live pinkies?
