Hi guys,

I have a small problem that I could use some help with. My lovely (but very old) black rat snake at work just died this past weekend. :cry:

In any case, my boss has out me in charge of procuring a new one, and I am kind of at a loss on where to start. I've been messing around on reptibid (or reptile auction now) all this week, but I've been losing the auctions due to my limited budget. Not surprising.

My question was does anyone know any place, or any breeder where I can get a black rat snake? Age, gender, and size do not matter...we're only looking for a "pet quality" one. It doesn't even have to be a particularly striking specimen. I'm just looking for a regular old black rat snake. The problem may be in the budget I've been given - I have about $45 to spend, and with shipping around $35, that is somewhat limiting.

I know a lot of you keep lots of different snakes including rats, so I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction. Anyway, I would really appreciate any help or suggestions anyone may have. I'm willing to look into anything. Thanks a bunch!

Does it HAVE to be a black rat?

Cuz hell, for $45 you could acquire like a dozen yellow rat snakes...
 
Hahaha, yeah, I know.

Unfortunately, my boss is real big on displaying "only native species." The blacks are the only rats native to Michigan, so that is what I gotta get. *sigh* So I'll keep looking around.
 
Write me an Email or PM. I have a yearling w/c from this area (NC mountains). They get BIG and jet black around these parts.

Unfortunately, I have not been given sufficient funds to purchase the high quality black rat from Chip. So I'm still open to any suggestions of where to go about finding one. Thanks for all your help so far guys!

*sigh* It is beginning to look like that may be my best bet.

I will wait to closer to the end of the auction to bid, and hope it doesn't get too high before then. Hopefully something else will pop up before it comes to that point. I'm not looking for a beauty queen, any ol' black rat will do.

It's so hard to buy stuff when its with other people's money (or their lack thereof). I'll be keeping my eyes open though.
 
Tell the boss to loosen the purse strings......or go flip tin and find it himself. :rolleyes:

A bit :-offtopic , was wondering where you work that has the "natives" on display ? Assuming you don't mind saying....

I used to live and work out that way (St. Clair Shores), still have a good friend that lives in Sterling Hgts. (Grin).
 
Woohoo! Looks like the black rat is mine! (the one Dave told me about) I'm so glad this is finally appearing to work out. My boss will sure be glad too (I am $5 under budget)! *whew* thats one less worry for me.

Of course I don't mind, I'm a naturalist at Stony Creek Metropark (you can usually find me in the Nature Center). I'm in charge of all their herps there, and its fabulous. Its going to be even more fun in about a year when the new HUGE building is complete and I can fill it with even more little critters. Gotta say, I love my job. :)
