I actually posted this as a reply under the "Fidgety" thread, but I thought I'd get some more views here, too.

I went to the pet store yesterday to hold a little baby corn snake that I fell in love with a few days before. He really grew on me. I talked to the manager who popped him and discovered that he's a male. He has a kink in his tail, and the manager looked at it and said that he has a fractured rib. He said that he can fix it, but without anesthesia :cry: . But I gave him the "OK" anyway with the intentions that I'd be in to adopt little Aspen this weekend. But along with his broken rib is my broken heart, because when I told my parents last night that I wanted to get a snake, my mom said that she doesn't want one in the house, cuz she's afraid of 'em. I'll be living with my parents for a few more months, but in the meantime, I need to respect them and do what's right. However, I feel horrible about what I did to Aspen, putting him through the refracture. I feel like I bonded with the little guy, and I only met him Friday. I want to get him, but I don't have a place I can put him. Anybody have any suggestions? Thank you so much.
 
I actually thought about doing that. In fact, a friend of mine works there, and she loves snakes. But the catch is, she and her hubby are in another state for vacation, and I need to adopt him by Saturday, as that is how long they're gonna put him on hold.
 
Make your mom feel guilty- how could she be afraid of a poor defenseless baby in a splint with a broken rib and a kinked little tail?? Then show her your escape-proof viv that you plan to keep him in.

I agree with some of the above statements; maybe try a different friend to keep him with. Would you friend who's going out of town be okay with you keeping your snake at her house while she's gone, and giving you a key so that you can come and water him daily, and do regular viv maintenence and handle him and whatnot? Maybe you could work something out with her.

Or appeal to your mom's 'defenseless baby with a broken rib and kinked tail' nature. I don't think my own mother would fall for that, but....you never know.

Neither of my parents knows I have a snake, and I don't plan on telling them. I live in a basement area, and my parents live upstairs and never step foot downstairs for the most part, but just in the event that they come down and go into the little back room where I keep my fish tanks and viv, I wrote a note and stuck it on the side of the viv that basically explains "If you've come down here and have, in all probability, seen the snake, I just want you to know the tank lid is perfectly secure with locks, and the snake is harmless."
 
I don't think my mom will fall for the "poor little broken snake in a splint" tactic. Although I think it's pretty cute, and it'd probably work for me if I had a daughter or whoever bring home, or want to bring home, a snake. Of course, I'm not afraid of 'em though.

I could never succeed at hiding a snake in the house.

I think what I'll do is wait for my friend (who's on vacation) to call me and try to work something out with her.

I know you said the pet shop wouldn't hold him beyond Saturday, but why not offer to pay if they'll board him for you for a few weeks? Some pet stores do reptile 'boarding' services - the one I used to work at did that. Someone who was going on holiday or something could bring their snake in and for a small fee we'd hang on to it for them. Ask around if they won't do it for you. :)

I didnt even ask permission to get a snake. I just kinda brought one home one day, my dad saw the cage and asked 'whats in there?'. I told him...he just didnt want it to get out and kill the little dogs we have in the house. So I told him that it was a baby corn snake, less than 1 foot and half long, non-poisoness and would be scared of anything as big as the dogs. It worked. :santa:
 
Thought I'd update y'all on the snake I fell in love with. I went to the pet store to see him on Friday, and somebody had already adopted him :cry: . But it's OK. I just hope that he went to a loving home. So I adopted a baby snow yesterday, and he's staying at my friend's place until I can move. His name's Atreyu. Hopefully I'll be putting pics up soon. He's so cute! :)
 
I agree with Nanci. LOL I went behind my parents back and bought my first cornsnake last year in Feb. I now have four snakes. I brought home both corns last summer from my boyfriends house (he lives close by so I could take care of them easily when they were there) My mother has a phobia of snakes and said that I could keep them if she didn't see them. Well...once I had them in my own room I decided to get a Texas rat snake. Now this past Christmas I adopted a kingsnake from the petstore I used to work at. I have the two corns and the king at my house now and Mom is finally warming up to them. She is used to me talking about them anyways. I have spread on my passion of reptiles to Dad and he just loves them now, though he is scared of Buddy the rat snake. I almost got him to convert his 65 gallon Discus & Tetra tank into a snake tank XD!

:-offtopic Awesome Name!! I had a doberman pinscher named Artex. You'll probably get it, but very few people did...

lol hiding snakes, thats what im doing at the moment did it with my ghecko just brought it home, mum didnt really say much, so did the same with a corn snake, wont take long for her to notice, im sure she wont mind, If i asked her before hand then it would prob be a no but since ive already got it not much she can say :crazy02:

Oh...You named it after a band? I thought you were referencing The Never Ending Story. Artex was Atreyu's horse...

I never even heard of the band... :shrugs:
