I'm thinking extreme hypo, not albino. The eyes and chin markings are hypo, not albino.

I have seen albino people.

Pretty insensitive. I recently watched a documentary on people who are Albino, and sadly it's another one of those differences that makes them the target of ridicule by a lot of people. To pose it as though this person is some sort of amusement, even as a joke, is pretty unfair.

Maybe it's just me... but if I happened across someone who I loved on the internet this way, I would be incredibly upset and offended.

I guess I just asssumed it was a pic of the OP, but I do see your point. (I often make fun of myself & not knowing what the OP looks like, it just assumed, which was probably a mistake on my part.)

It was this post that just really seemed insensitive and cruel...

"Funny? I'm dead serious. I've got him in a 500 gallon tank in my game room."???

I guess I can understand the intrigue that, like our snakes, people are also affected by albinism, but the whole "I've got him caged up eating rats" comparison seems just cruel. I think it's natural to be interested or surprised by someone who's albino, but it shouldn't cross the line to become amusement for people who aren't. Just my $.02.

I have a good friend who is a true albino. No pigmentation at all, hair, eyes, or skin. She's also mostly blind because of her affliction. Christina is also one of the sweetest, kindest, and most loving young ladies I have ever had the privelege to meet.

I'm not one for polictical correctness, but I hope the OP developes some sensitivity before karma kicks his arse...

I don't know, folks. Allow me to play devil's advocate for a moment. A big part of humor is the unexpected punch line. I expected to see a snake of some kind and I saw a man's face. It tickled my funny bone because of the absurdity of it. But I in no way would ever laugh at any kind of joke meant to put people down. If the man had really been an albino, I would have been ticked off. But he's not. Perhaps this joke would be considered in poor taste by some, but cruel? It seems too absurd to be taken so seriously. Just my .02.

Apply a different physical characteristic to the same joke. Still funny?

What if the title was something like "ID Black Morph, Please", and was opened to show a really dark black person. Follow that up with, "I keep him in a 500 gallon tank..." Is this still funny? Afterall, it still fits your definition of being unexpected, which, as you say, is a "big part of humour"...You're still laughing, right?

What about "Help! Neurological Disorder", and the topic opened to show a mentally disabled individual? You still laughing?

The point is...it's rude. Is it criminal? Nah. Is it evil or vile? No, not really. Is it cruelly inteded? No way of knowing for sure, but doesn't seem to be. Does that make it right? Absolutely not.

When you are in a public place, speaking to a public audience, it is typically a good idea to keep your insensitivity, bigotry, and personal prejudices to yourself, rather than toss them about as if everyone is expected to follow suit. This is a public venue, and this topic is a public speaking engagement. It may not be blatantly wrong, but it sure does speak voumes for the character of the individual making the "joke"...

There is a thing in this world called common decency and respect. A topic of this nature shows a complete lack of both, and personally, I don't find that humorous in the least. In fact, quite the opposite, I find it very sad and disheartening.

But you can go ahead and keep laughing, if you like...:headbang:

Apply a different physical characteristic? Are you serious?

You could apply different physical characteristics to a dumb blonde joke and it would become highly offensive to some people. That's a completely irrational thing to say

Only when you assume that everyone finds "dumb blonde" jokes entertaining. I know quite a few highly intellectual and intelligent blondes that would be very offended by a "dumb blonde" joke, and personally, I don't think a public forum, with such a wide variety of readers and followers, would exactly be the perfect place to tell one, do you?

The point is not whether you or I personally find the joke offensive. The point is to show a little sensitivity to the audience. You want to tell black jokes, Jew jokes, albino jokes, dumb blonde jokes...do so in the company of your friends and partners, not in a public, family friendly forum, where such things are liable to piss off more than a couple people.

Yes...I am serious. A little restraint and sensitivity goes a long way in this world. And before anyone starts complaining about "PC BS", political correctness has nothing to do with it. It's about respecting the people that you don't know that will read this, and having a little self restraint, not being overly PC...

All of your posts on this have been spot on. I was disgusted by the original post, but couldn't articulate the right words to address it. Thank you.

^Agreed!

Also, I think the other issue, which is really the thing that I found most offensive, is that there was a specific human being that was used to discriminate. It took the hypothetical or ironic "haha, funny that humans are also albino..." to a level where you are actually using a particular human being (HUMAN BEING) to demean on a public forum, by talking about him in a way as to belittle him as being less than human because of his condition/differences.

I think that there are many people with conditions or traits that make them different (like snake people), and a lot of people visit forums to escape public discrimination or ridicule that they may face on a daily basis. And I feel like it's rude, insensitive, and inappropriate to use a public forum as a tool to further those judgments against those who may be different.

Just my .02. Not to keep this discussion dragging on, but since it was bumped, I think it's only fair to speak my peace about it.
