Up until today I've been somewhat coping out, using paper towels as "substrait". During a trip to Pet Co to get a suitable enclosure for a new arrival I noticed a "buy one large bag of aspen, get another bag free" sale. I decided two bags of aspen were worth $6 and made the purchase. I cleaned out both my 20gal vivs and added the aspen. It smells great and looks a bit nicer, so I'm happy. My snakes must be happy as well because i caught one of my shy yearlings who I've never seen exploring his viv out and about! Not only am I seeing him out in the open, but climbing on his tree branch as well!

Alright, now that I've got that out of my system :rolleyes:
At Pet Co what I grabbed an enclosure with the most ground space I could find that didn't have a lot of unnecessary hight. I ended up getting a breeder box. It came with a plastic divider that slides into place. I put the divider in the middle and set up the enclosure for my 1.1 Reverse Okeetees.

I've noticed that they sort of raise their heads up and look at eachother sometimes.. should I put something (piece of construction paper perhaps) on the piece of plastic to prevent them from seeing eachother? How safe do you think this enclosure is? I don't think either of the snakes will push down the piece of plastic, but I suppose it is a possibility..

I hope housing them this way works out, because it's rather convenient and aesthetic. I just hope it's safe. Has anyone purchased a Herp Haven large breeder box?

I did actually purchase the "breeder box" with another snake in mind. If housing the two together seems too risky after I give it a bit of a trial I can just make it his home. For now I have this set up for him..

If you are worried about them staring at each other and stressing each other out why not just slide in a piece of paper along with the devider (no tape though). :D

You got that breeder box @ pet co? How much was it? How big? I've been looking for something like that :D
 
It's 17 3/4'' by 12'' by 6 7/8''

The plastic divider has three different "slots" that it can be placed in. You can put it down the middle or divide the box into 1/3 and 2/3s. It was $20
 
I too have wondered about them staring at each other, the rack I am building for my males vivs has them butted right against one another. So snake, glass, glass, snake. I wonder if I should cover the ends so they can't see each other? They're feeding cups are beside each other when they eat, and they have bumped noses through the air holes in the cups (just the tips of their noses fit through), so I think it will be okie. But will their behavior change once the female snakes come into the picture (NOT in the same vivs!! No worries there! Allll the way across the room infact...30 feet away =P) I mean that after one male is allowed to breed with the female, will the other male get.. well.. jealous? Don't want them to be striking at eachother on opposite sides of the glass =O
 
just to let you know your male corn may stop eating because the smell of the female will keep his mind on one thing only...reproducing with her....also i own the same plastic box with a green top....I use it for feeding my boa....except mine did not include the divider....just to let you know be careful when removing the lid to the box....they can crack the plastic box itseld rather easily....but your setup looks pretty damn good.....good luck and keep the pics coming...
 
If you're worried about them knocking the divider down, you can secure it with aquarium silicone. You'll have to put them somewhere else while it cures, though.

Well, he's lived right next to her for as long as I've had the pair. I'd suppose he's been able to smell/sense her this whole time.. and his appetite's fine. I'll keep your words in mind though and look for any signs of abnormality.

Also, thanks for the advice. I'll be extra careful with the plastic and only take off the top when I'm cleaning. Truthfully, I've had more problems with the little "doors" breaking off of these types of plastic enclosures than I have had with the actual plastic cracking.

hmm.. is it available at pet stores, or aquarium specialty stores only? Seems like a good idea.. I'll have to really think about what I want to use it for in the future. I could keep it around for hatchlings or eventually take out the divider and expand the area for one of my snakes as it grows.

I'm guessing this aquarium silicone stuff is permanent..
ahh, decisions. They seem to be doing alright with just the plastic right now.. although they're both hiding out in the warm spot of their tp rolls digesting yesterday's meal :boring:

You should be able to get aquarium silicone at your local PetCo.

As an aside, I use the large Herp Haven as my adult feeding bin.

I love aspen for my corns, too (hate trackin' it around the house when it gets spilled)...I flip flop between aspen and newspaper, depending on my motivation level...I will say all my corns, and especially my black rats, like to burrow and/or rearrange it :*)

It makes me happy that my corns seem to be more comfortable exploring their vivs now. I've been seeing a lot of holes and "snake marks" in their new bedding. =)
 
:) Although some males will stop eating if a female is close, I have never had this problem and I have kept males next to females for 15 years. They will do this in the spring when the female is ovulating but normallyhave no response to them. As far as them seeing one another, don't worry about it. They are fine. Stress usually occurs when they touch one another and start the jerking motion to show they don't like it. Your set up is great. :)
 
yo giantblueberry, what type of snake is that in your spare tank....is that a corn? very unique looking to me....let me know....thanks
 
I found pretty much the exact same enclosure and have ordered 15 of them for my snake rack I'm going to build :) It is by Exo-terra and is their largest faunarium :) It has pretty much identical dimensions you stated and I have found that even three dividers work well, as they must have planned due to the fact that you can get access to all three compartments via the fancy lid. I know from experience that for hatchlings these would be safe IF YOU COVER OR FILL THE LITTLE HOLE IN THE TOP BIG ENOUGH FOR AIRLINE. I have had to rescue a little hatchling at work once who got himself stuck in there ;)

The following pics are of one that I will be setting up for tarantulas hence the eco-earth bedding :) I love how these are so clear! ;)

Many pet shops have aquarium silicone as hagen sells small tubes of it. It is exponentially more expensive though than if you buy a large caulking gun tube of it at your local hardware store. Basically what you have to look for is "ACID BASE" as opposed to oil base. As long as it is acid base and cured for at least 24 <I always wait 48> hours you should be fine, although I don't know if it will adhere to plastic so well. Never tried it! :)

I think that I might try a safety method for making sure the divider slats stay in place and that is to make some tight shims out of wood. Bascally jam them in to the slats so that they little divider is sandwiched in between. If you don't follow what I mean I could jimmy up some cardboard the way I think it will work and then take pics :)
