So the thing I've been dreading since Friday took effect at work today- they unleashed the Super Filter. Previously, we had been blocked from websites about drugs, alcohol, firearms and porn. But today they blocked everything except health, medical, travel and news. So of course cs.com was blocked. But not my personal e-mail, windstream, which I access at work through the windstream website. And not roombareview.com! Or Bank of America, or anything to do with weather. Or the Source's iSpy feed. But all I actually had to do to get around that was call the IT department and ask to have a password to sign in under a personal account, rather than the generic radiology account. There wasn't the Spanish Inquisition that I had feared about why did _I_ need to access anything restricted. Of course my account will be monitored, but as long as I don't access anything that was previously unallowed: drugs, porn, etc., I should not get in trouble. But now I have to log off and on all the time if I actually want to use the Internet unrestricted...(People in the whole hospital think that if there is a workstation, they automatically can just sit right down and do whatever they want, like someone from some whole other department will walk past my workstation and sit down and get on the Internet. I don't think that's right.)

Anyway- we'll see how it goes tomorrow. I guess I just don't get the point.

Well at least you were able to get around it! :) I know it can be a hassle - I had that issue at work as well, but not any longer!

This must be contagious, as my daughters both work at schools and the same thing was done. One daughter lives local, so no big deal, but the other lives in WA. She has two computers at home but can't access e-mail (long story for a different forum [why my son-in-law is a $#%^%#@ forum}) So she would e-mail me at lunch, but no more.
There are times I want to move to a mountain top because I feel like our lives are on display and we have no privacy. Technology is a wonderful thing, but I fear it is also invasive. my .02, susan

I have a friend who works at one of those wilderness camps for bad kids. They are also filtered, so he can't look up drug info that is pertinent to his dealings with the kids.

:-offtopic OK Nanci, you work at a hosp. We have these privacy laws in OR, I was in the hosp. Dec. and Jan. for ortho surg. because these were both emergencies I hadn't told my MD. Later I asked him why he didn't come and see me he said, he is no longer able to see patient list and can only see a list of the patients he admits!!!! Dumb, as I don't want my ortho txing my high BP. Which always goes crazy low when I'm in hosp. susan

Look into circumventors. I use those to fight the internet censorship that my school attempts. It ends up loading really slow, but at least you can get to anything you want.

No, they don't have a policy about how much time you spend looking- just what you look at. I can't even leave my area and go out looking for other work because I am tied to the phone. So after the room are cleaned and stocked and set up for the next patient- there's a lot of down time some days waiting for patients to arrive. Busy work only goes so far.

My wife has the same problems in her job. I was being  Sorry.
Companies are not trying to protect themselves from idiots who bring in bad press, an we all get to suffer..

I think a lot of companies are also trying to prevent those who know little to nothing about computers and the internet in general from accidentally downloading viruses and spyware too. When I worked at SCE there were constant problems with viruses because people were randomly browsing unsafe sights in addition to inappropriate sights - so they kept cracking down on what you were and were not allowed to look up. Just before I left, they'd cracked down so hard that only certain teams - that needs access to various websites for research and basic function - and management could access ANYthing outside of the intranet structure and this included weather channels, outside e-mail sites, news, and any types of message boards or interactive sites.
