Introduction, New Member W/Wild Caught..Pic

Hello, New member here hoping to introduce myself and my wild caught snake, Red.

I live in Ft Lauderdale Florida where I caught Red in March of 2007. Here's how I caught him (I thinks it's a him): I was out in front of my house working on my car (1987 Buick Grand National) when I heard my neighbor scream "Snake !!", then "Get The Kids Out Of The CAR !!!". He worked as a landscaper and obtained a few potted bushes from a job site. Upon removing them from the back of his SUV he spotted Red slithering over the tarp he lined the back with. Needless to say, I came running over to their rescue and grabbed the snake by the tail. I have had him ever since. Here's a picture...

I am told that this is a Miami Phase Red Rat Snake....Please confirm or argue that point. I live about 30 minutes north of Downtown Miami. I am uncertain where exactly he got the potted bushes from, but I don't imagine it would be very far from here.

When I first caught him it was a challenge to get him to eat. He turned down pinkies, and I was hassled by catching those anoles that thrive around here (although I did eventually come up with an ingenious way to catch them). Finally however, after about 2 months I was able to turn him on to pinkies. From that point on he eats like a champ.

PS: I also have a Striped Cal King, and a Ball Python.

Very nice Miami corn :0) I'm glad your neighbor didn't kill him and you were able to save him :) Has he calmed down to where you can handle him? I know wild caught snakes tend to be stubborn when it comes to handling..

Welcome to the site, and what a totally handsome snake Red is! Great rescue story, kudos to you!

Is the snake wild till or did it tame down? I have a few wild garter snakes and most of them did not tame down very much. JW how the corns do going from wild to captive. I hope your going to keep it till it dies, because i dunno how good he'll do going from captive fed to wild living again. Might be fine, but i wouldn't chance it. Great snake though! Congrats on the cool catch.

More than one member on here has w/c corns that are as tame as you coud wish! (And some have c/b hellions)

lol good point! it's just so hard to tell. I guess it's all luck. Or someone with a natural talent of taming snakes. I just try to be as gentle as possible all the time. It's mainly because she's new to me and the house, but i figure after 6month- a year i won't have to be baby gentle anymore, and not have to worry so much about scaring her and biting. Because i figure she should be use to me by then. If i'm wrong to assume this please let me know, anyone.

Erm, Jimmy, this is someone else's thread about their snake!:-offtopic

On-topic, he is the very picture of a miami-phase, and yes, 'red rat snake' is another name for corn snake.

my bad i'm so sorry i lost track of my post while rambling and thought i was in a different thread. thanks for checking me back into place. sorry

Welcome, that's a nice looking free snake.
I've never seen a cornsnake in the wild here but some of the black ratsnakes are pretty tame right away.

I would have to agree that is a very nice looking miami-phase cornsnake. Congrats on the grab and rescue!

Off topic - '87 Grand National!?!?! That is my DREAM car!!

I don't handle him often, he was a pretty bad striker for a while. When I first caught him he bit me a few times the first couple of days. He was half the size he is now (that is a recent pic) and drew a little bit of blood, so I was never too anxious to hold him. I got a thick kitchen glove to take him out of the cage when it's cleaning time. At first he would strike at the glove, but recently he has stopped...not sure if I'm in ant rush to stick my hand in there unprotected yet though. When I feed him I'll hold the mouse by the tail(bare handed) and he'll take it from me the second he sees it. At least he knows the difference between my hand and lunch.

On another note, my buddy just caught a corn snake locally, but it's really dark in color. Did a little searching around the net and have not found a picture simmilar to it. I will have to get a pic from him and post...It's very dark in color so that you have to look close to see the cornsnake pattern on the back. It's tail almost becoms black.

Haha..It's for sale pending a head gasket fix....Too hot or wet these days to be out there working on it. I'll probably find another pet snake when I pop the hood !!

That may very well be a black ratsnake. Search for pics of a juvenile.

That's a gorgeous snake! He probably would like something larger than pinkies! You could gradually work up to a mouse that is as wide as the snake at the widest part. I wouldn't just jump up to that size, though. He'd probably get really gentle if you handled him more frequently- corns are one of the most naturally gentle snakes.

I have a WC corn from my front yard!

He's eating mice now...The whole pinky thing lasted a few months, then fuzzies...Now mice. I've had him a year and a half now.

Wow... and he still strikes? I've never known a corn like that. He is one beauty, though. If I caught something like that in my yard there's NO WAY, I'd be letting it go... well, if it wouldn't eat for me I would.

Congrats! And KUDOS for saving him!
