Is it REALLY illegal to throttle this person??

The Maddest Hatter
Last night I went to Petsmart to pic up some snakey things. I stopped over at the reptiles and took a look but there wasn't really anything amazing. ANYWAY, I headed over to the counter and noticed a kritter keeper with a corn snake in it and that's it,a corn and dirt...I over heard the woman holding it saying "It has it's cage with it...just...I don't care what you do with it, just take it" I walk up and ask "Is that what it's lived in?" the woman turns to me glaring and answers "Duh...it's a snake. This is all it gets!"...with out a second hesitation I grab the keeper with an "I'll take it!" .....and now I have a new snake....He ((The sex is unknown)) is probably about a year or so, about 30 inches or longer and 84 grams....poor thing's spine is visible...he could barely move in that "cage" and I'm pretty sure they weren't feeding him right...for now he is in a 10 gallon with a heat pad, a water bowl and a hide until I get a screen for my 20 gallon today...I would have grabbed one last night if I realized mine was broken...

I just can't believe that someone could be so cruel...I mean yeah it's a snake but...it's alive!! I wanted to throttle her!! But I shut my mouth, grabbed the snake and left after I payed for my purchase.......grrrr I just can't believe people's inhumanity!

The "Duh, it's a snake", like snakes don't deserve anything but some dirt to live, just makes me so mad. Some people just should never be allowed to have pets. There should be a background check before being able to buy a pet just like a job.

It's truly unfortunate, which is why most people advocate not purchasing snakes from stores that keep their animals under such conditions. Now that they made that sale, they'll get another one to sell, and probably keep it under the same conditions that drew you in. Don't buy puppies from stores who get theirs from puppy mills, etc. It's all the same principal. If at all possible, buy from breeders OR locally owned mom and pop stores who suffer from the larger chain sales, but keep their animals much more favorably.

In the meantime, I'd encourage a minimum of several months in quarantine, in a different room from the rest of your collection, and strict handwashing after handling. Good luck!

Wait a minute...I thought this was how the pet store was keeping it. Do you mean that a woman came TO the store with this snake? If so, disregard what I said above. ;) Well, except for the quarantine part.

Lori, I hate to argue with you, but I *think* that horrible woman was bringing the snake to the pet shop to get rid of it.

yeah the woman was bringing the snake in and trying to get them to take it. They wouldn't because of it's condition. Atm it is in the spare bed room in QT and I've been washing my arms up to me elbows when ever I leave the room ><

Sad. Really sad. It always amazes me how people manage to be that insensitive, not to mention cruel. :(

This is why I hate idiots. Not meaning you of course, but the lady trying to pawn off the snake. :) I'd imagine the snake probably belonged to the woman's kid(s) and they weren't taking care of it so she wanted to dump it. At least it's in much better hands how. Good luck with your new baby. OH! Post some pics!!

I was thinking that too Bekers...I'm guessing that it was a gift for her son at one point before she decided she didn't want to deal with it anymore. It's EXTREMELY hand shy but not aggressive. A little bit of handling should calm him down..He's gonna be a permanent resident I'm pretty sure...I'll post pics soon. I took some when I first put him in his tank, you can't tell how skinny he is in it tho....

Poor little guy! I'd start him out with small meals, with slit mice, so as not to stress him. Glad he found you!

I would have throttled her or at least dumped some dirt on her,lol Great save in a few months the little one will be up to normal weight and happy:)

Lol. I'm sure Danielle would have her shaking in her high heels! ;) But I fear that I was a bit lacking in the Danielle department...and my 120 pound moose-dog...would have licked her to death ><

wow i know i would do the same although there is a reptile emporium by me with this crazy guy who owns it and believe me he takesexcellent care of his animals but right now he has 1 green anaconda and 3 adult full grown ball pythons in spereate tanks but the tanks aren't big ennough for them.the snakes are healthy they just need living quarters:(

Haha...I know...I was on my first cup of coffee and had to read it twice, hence my second post. The synapses were misfiring.

Anyway, I agree with the others, it's great that you rescued the little ones from such a bad situation. I'm looking forward to the photos as well. Good luck!

To answer your question, yes it is illegal to throttle this person. Trust me, I've looked into before. However, if you can make it look like an accident you may just get away with it.
