is moss necessary?

No, but it can assist in shedding by providing the snake with a moist place to help loosen the dead skin and a place to crawl through to help remove the skin. It is more beneficial for those snakes that have had or are having trouble shedding rather than those that haven't had any problems.
 
the petshop (petco) i have mine from said she never hd prob's shedding. so it wouldn't hurt to still get some huh? if i decide to get some (moss), should i only put it in there around shedding time? or all the time? plus..when would i have to change it for a new one. does it rot, or anything like it?
 
I'd suggest waiting until the after the first shed just to see if there is even a problem. No use diagnosing a cure if there isn't even a illness (or spending the money either). ;)
 
Wether or not the shop had troubles shedding, it's all about the enviroment. Your is different then the shop. If your humidity is good, and your snake has no problem shedding it isn't nessasary. If your snake does, it's good to place it in the viv. Around shedding time is good.
 
A tub containing crumpled up, damp paper towels is just as effective as moss. Having said that, I do use moss for mine occasionally - maybe I'm just a bit of a softy!
