IS MY VIV TO BIG?

I am new to the snake world and I'm receiveing my little man on Tuesday Hopefully. Everything is set up for his arrival. But I have a few questions. I have aspen spread out throughout the tank, he has two hides a half peice of wood and a hollow rock to hide under. some greenery and a water bowl. My question is I have a 30' by 1' tank, I dont exactly know how many gallons it is????? I have been told by 1 person that its 55 gallons and by someone else that it is 30 to 35 gallons....... Is this to big for a hatchling corn? I need some advice quick because he is to get here tomorrow and if something is to be done then it needs to be done quick. Is the setup I have to big?:uhoh:

You probably meant 30 inches, not feet. That seems about the size of the 20L I have vern in. With plenty of nice, secure hides he should be fine. Maybe take some dark paper and black out one or both of the back corners to make it feel less exposed.

Good luck and resist the temptation to play with him for the first few days.

Yes I didnt mean 30 ft. hahaha. So if I kind of crowd him with stuff he should be fine? Just tough to find with so much room huh? by the way thank you.

Personally, I'm not a fan of too much stuff in the viv (mostly for cleaning/upkeep reasons). If you're concerned that there's too much "exposed space" between hides and the water dish, you could do something like put a few paper towel roll halves strategically between hides and between one or more hide and the water dish. Cut a few arches in the sides so he can slip in and out along the length.

I have probably 1-3 inches of aspen in Vern's viv and she has created an entire subway system criss crossing the viv. I've watched her dive down a hole on the far opposite side of her water dish and a few minutes later see her little nose poking up next to the dish. I probably annoy her to no end every time I feed her because I re-fluff the aspen while she's eating (after I scoop out the poop and change her water). She does seem to enjoy tunnelling around in there.

The 4 babies I have in the rack downstairs are in 12 qt Sterilite, and they all burrow in the aspen, too.

Is there anywhere I can get aspen for a bit cheaper. I got a 16 dollar bag and I used half of it putting aspen in the tank last night and I still dont think I have enough. I think that tank is like 30-35 gallons or so? But still not sure. I can send a pic tonight. Kind of expensive though for bedding i think

That's what a 20L measures. I have put babies in that size. I put in three of four small hides and a big fluffy vine to make ground cover. Maybe a climbing tree.

Lila weighed 24 grams when I put her in there.

I dont see your thermostat? Where did you place it in here? Do you use a UTH or a heat lamp?

I see what looks like two white cords (one on either end). One is probably the thermostat probe, the other the thermometer. As aestically nice as Nanci keeps the living space for all her animals, I'm sure she hides all the wires and hardware. Mine just hang down from the knock out for the wires. Vern used to climb them when she was smaller. Haven't seen her up there in a while, so either she's too big and has lost interest.

The stat probe and the warm side temp probe go in on the left, and the cool side probe goes in on the right.

Isn't that sweet? It's my most perfect temp monitoring set up I have. That's running on a BAH100 thermostat, which keeps it very steady. (I'd still rather have Herpstats on everything...)

That looks like its a little bit more money than I wanted to spend just to know what the temp is in my little mans viv.

You don't need to spend that much if you just have one viv, go to walmart and buy a plug-in lamp dimmer. Plug the UTH into it and check the temps with a regular thermometer (be sure to put it under the substrate right on top of the uth.) Adjust the dimmer sliding switch until temps are right.

thanks for the advice. I am just really nervous I dont want to do something wrong. I want to make sure he gets the best care but I also dont want to spend a fortune since he is going to be the only one for now. I would definatly upgrade if I was to get more which will probably be happening in the next few months. After I get this guy settled of course. But what are the $$$$ options as far as different methods to keeping his tank at the ideal temp.

I'm one of those people that feels critter cages should be as big as you have space for within reason. Obviously a 10x10' room would be a bit big and make it very hard for you to find your hatchling let alone enjoy it, but a 30" tank sounds dandy to me and will last your snake for years.

As many others have said so well, just make sure the baby has plenty of cover and places to hide and it will be really happy. A snake that feels safe is going to be less jumpy and less prone to heath issues then a paranoid snake that always has to be looking around for the next big scary thing walking by and seeing him out in the open and eating him.

Happy decorating :)

any idea if its to big or what? what do i need to add to make him feel more secure?

I don't really think there is any such thing as too large a tank as long as you provide enough hides and cover.

Your baby will be fine. My baby ratsnake went in a tank that size when I first got him.

He looks two different colors in these pics but the first one is alot more accurate sorry it was a camera phone. Hes not the color he looks in the second at all. thanks and sorry again.
