Ok, so I got out the my normal '09 out for handling today... And decided i'd have a look at her tail shape and see if I could take a guess on what sex she actually is, and found that 'she' actually has a really fat tail past the vent, it dont taper quickly... I took these shots, What ya think?

Hmmmm....
That is what my female looked like when she was gravid and about to lay eggs.

What size is your snake - Length? Weight?

correct me if I'm wrong, but this snake seems to be quite overweight! really outlined "hips" there...
Sorry, can't help with the tail... I'm hardly ever correct in guessing genders from tail taper...

Unfortunately, severely obese snakes, and those that are about to defecate make sexing-by-tail even harder than normal.

If she's not full of eggs and about to lay, he/she's very overweight. Judging by the length of the tail, my guess is going to be male. But keep in mind, sexing by tail is never a 100% positive method for sexing.

How old is the snake? What are you feeding him/her?

Sorry, pardon that was a mistake, she was sold to me as an '07. She looks loaf-of-bread-like right up until the tail part... I shall have to get some whole body shots, she's weighing in at just under 300g and theres no chance she's gravid... She's being fed once every 7 days on one medium sized mouse... Is she really obese?! :O :( I'll take more pics, oh god how do I put her on a diet?.. My poor girl...

Just to add she really cant be gravid, had her since shes a baby and she's not had any nookie!

Im sorry i havent figured out how to resize images on imageshack yet. really sorry... is newly pronounced he really obese?

I don't think you look morbidly obese but I would say chubby is probably a nice way to say it. My 2007 babies are just under 300 grams so that part sounds right. The hips make me think you might be feeding a little too much. You might try going to a little smaller mouse or change to a 10 day schedule.

I don't think anything can be accurately said about gender from your pictures.

I think I'd put that snake on a 14 day feeding plan, and do some swimming or stair climbing as well!

Is he/she having regular bowel movement. It looks backed up to me. I dont see a snake getting that heavy on just one mouse a week.

Looks like a fatty deposit or something along those lines to me, definitely get him/her some exercise! Swimming, stiar climbing, ect.

Ok guys, thanks for your help, stools seem frequent & healthy lookin - I'll get the tape measure out and find out how long she is after work. Thanks for the help guys - Stair climbing?? Making her slither up the stairs lol? Wow, she's not gna be happy with me. Is there anything I can do to minimize the like, long-term effects of being fat if you know what I mean?

My healthy adults get one adult mouse every two or three weeks. You could safely take her down to one mouse a fortnight as part of her diet plan.

I dont see a snake getting that heavy on just one mouse a week.
07 would be pretty much a fully-grown adult and one mouse a week is really at the top end of the amount that needs to be fed at this age. 10-14 day feeds are more usual for an adult Corn.

There are no hard and fast rules really - they all have different metabolisms. I had one monster male who piled on the pounds when eating one adult mouse a fortnight. One every three weeks was a maintenance diet for him - he didn't lose weight on it. You just have to tweak your feeding regime according to how each snake reacts.

Thanks so much for the replies, I honestly had no idea that she was a large girl... Its diet time for Seanna then... !!

The thing is, it sneaks up on you - I've certainly had it happen to me more than once. Weight gain in snakes is very gradual and it tends to be distributed along their length. It's also as much to do with proportion and muscle tone as it is to do with straight up flab. Even regular weighing won't guarantee you a slimline beastie - some can be very large but not be carrying excess fat. Until or unless they develop something like hips, it can be very difficult to spot.

At least you've caught it and can deal with it, so as Wade says, no harm done.
