Folk lore, urban legend, or myth.. Your choice as what to call that information! I am backing Joe on this one!

Fish yes... snakes no... false... incorrect... fuzzy-herp-math

And even though that happens with fish, their internal organs are still growing and they get stunted and sometimes pressed to death.

The more you know.

indeed.
Fish don't get the love or understanding most other animals do, when I was a kid a gold fish that lived for 6 months was 'old', well, I now know they can live for up to 20 years. And their growth can be stunted by underfeeding, like any animal, but it's really unhealthy.

I hear miamis are a smaller morph, but you might want to do some checking on that. Or get a rosy boa or something (I'm obsessed with them now, lol).

thanks guys.
I was sure i heard a while ago that it was a load of cods waddle! haha i jsut wanted to chek with you guys.

no this is not true...i believe that there are ways of stunting the snakes growth but I will not state them...they are not healthy for your animal!

Well, technically a snake will grow to the size of its tank then stop... by dying... and fish never stop growing, and while they may be able to live in a small tank, "there is a difference between surviving and flourishing"

i dont quite understand what your saying here. but what i am getting is that you think a snake will stop growing due to the size of the enclosure and then die? a snakes growth has nothing to do with its inclosure, its what your feeding and how much, its a health thing. if you are feeding your adult snake two big mice a week but you have it in a 5 gallon tank its not just gonna roll over dead. but i would say it could cause some extreme stress to the snake which could lead to eating problems then cause death but thats not because it has stopped growing, its because it stopped eating. or your snake might just get really fat from sitting in a 5 gallon and eating fat mice every week, lol.

so......iv got a 12 inch by 9 inch tank for my snake.

hes a few months old. Hes about 12-13 inch long himself. Is the fact that hes in a smaller tank (due to him being a hatchling) going to stop him from growing big even though im regularly feeding him or not? He is plenty active, especially at nights and is in good health.

Iv been told that this tank should last him for about 12-18 months and then he will need a bigger one.

does this sound about right guys??

That sounds a little small to have a temperature gradient to me, personally. I put my little ones in longer tubs, 24"X10" so they still feel secure but can thermoregulate

well hes got an under tank heater in one of the corners which is a third of the size of his tank. Directly above that hes got a terracotta pot which he loves to go in for heat, its dark and cosey in ther for him. In the opposite corner hes got a cave wer it will be cooler. Hes also got a water bowl that he can go in (if he wants) and hanging vines for climbing.

Does this sound ok?? iv heard that with the tank being smaller and haveing 2 hiding places it will make him feel a lot more secure.

Im going to get some thermometers to make sure that the temps are right but he does have everything he needs i think?

what do you guys rekon??

Sorry, my sarcasm was misunderstood. I was just saying that while a snake may seem to fit in a tank, it might not be comfortable for them, and would have a better quality of life in a larger area.

yes. Why stop at the bare minium for your pet? I plan to have a 45 gal for mine when he grows up. I know he'll make use of the space, and he may be 'just a snake' but I will do all I can for him.
(and then I can use my 33 gal for something else....hummmm rosy boa...*drool*)

12" x 13" does sound small, but I don't think it'll do him harm. I have my one year old in a 36" x 12", and I would say he loves it. I've never understood those who say large tanks are bad for young corns, it's not like they live in small tanks in the wild, and as long as they have lots of hides I don't see why they would be 'freaked out'. (all that is the opinion of a snake newb, I haven't been doing this as long as most. But I've done lots of research, I hope that counts).

here's my set up:
My tank

Size ref (I was lucky he was chillin' in the more open hide tonight, he likes all his hides equally).

And I know he climbs all over everything, I plan on adding more fake plants and putting suction-cups on the back wall. And yes, that is a figurine of Hal Jordan by the teapot.

I'm sure your snake will be fine.

ye he seems to be doing fine in his tank! settled in nicely and is very active, both climbing his vines and just generally cruising around (mostly at night). Im not going to change his tank now because hes just settled in and i dont think it will be good for him. Im goin to wait until hes 8 -10 month old then il think about gettin him a larger tank and he can enjoy the space more then but for now i think hel be just fine :)
thanks guys.
